Jodi Nagy, 22, has a radio-ready voice and a sultry figure, just like her blond-bombshell heroine. So says Joan Minnery, organizer of the fifth annual singing contest which wrapped up on Sunday. Nagy won the adult division and was crowned overall grand champion, while Jessica Townson took the teen category and Rain Richardson was named junior champ.
"She's a firepot. She's a hot tamale," Minnery says of Nagy, who wowed the judges with a powerful rendition of Aguilera's hit, Hurt. "She should be on the radio. She could make a Canadian producer a lot of money.
"That girl is gonna sell records."
Calling her the best singer the local event has attracted, Minnery said Nagy riveted the crowd.
The attention was a welcome change, says Nagy, who works as a receptionist by day and operates Jodi's Karaoke and DJ services on the weekend, hosting karaoke nights at Frankie's and Goodfellas.
"Working in a bar, nobody cares - nobody even looks up when I'm singing," she says. "People are there to dance or drink, not to hear me sing.
"I loved the fact I could put on a show (at Brantford Idol) and people respected that."
Nagy is still ecstatic over her victory, which came on her third Idol endeavour. Previously, her highest placement had been fourth.
This time, the fruits of studies with vocal teacher Jamie Macdonald shone through. "I spent six months on Hurt before I sang it in public. People don't realize how much hard work it takes."
While she'd love a singing career, the city resident is tempering those dreams with a healthy dose of realism.
"I'd love to sing in front of 20,000 people. But at the same time, I'm keeping my feet on the ground. This is a tough business."
The Idol prizes included $500 for Nagy, while Jessica received $300 and Rain got $200.
Performing a song from the Disney movie Anastasia, the 11-year-old junior victor won the crowd over right from the get-go, says Minnery.
"Rain has always been a good performer, but she's not always in your face with strong vocals. This time, she just lit up the stage, her eyes sparkled - she didn't even need a spotlight. She was in first place all the way."
Jessica, meanwhile, is a country stylist who projected maturity and experience despite being just 14. Rounding out her vocal skills with dance and showmanship, "she really put on a show," says Minnery. "And her voice is 20 years ahead of its time."
The organizer also singled out competitor Jesse Stutsman for special praise. A Brantford singer-songwriter who's a sensation on YouTube, Stutsman was named first runnerup in the adult class and carried off the people's choice title. Audiences loved him, despite nervousness which betrayed his lack of stage experience.
He'll have a chance to overcome that stagefright during coming appearances with the other Idols, including appearances at Ghost Encounters at Brantwood Farms on Oct. 19-20.
Noting a decline in attendance this year, Minnery plans to rejig the event for 2008. It may be expanded to include a wider range of performers, including bands and dancers.
