AgriProcessors Deceives Consumers
When Dr. Grandin inspected the facility in 2006, the plant showed her slaughters that did not include a second cut more...at all, and she gave them her approval. Just two weeks prior to PETA's August 2008 undercover investigation, AgriProcessors gave a private tour to selected rabbis, community leaders, and reporters, and video footage from that tour shows slaughter done without a second cut at all.
Clearly, AgriProcessors wanted consumers to believe that the plant was operating in a manner that would meet the high standards expected, but PETA's investigation revealed that things happen differently behind closed doors.
In light of this new video exposing the gouging second cuts—and AgriProcessors' quite different conduct during the tour—Dr. Grandin has made a new assessment of AgriProcessors, stating, "The undercover video clearly showed that when they think nobody is looking, they do bad things in this plant."
Demand that the USDA require that AgriProcessors install video cameras on the kill floor as part of a live video-monitoring system that would be audited by a third party. A number of plants already use this important technology, which is recommended by Dr. Grandin, and it ensures that proper procedures and laws are followed at all times. less

The footage shows some of the cruelty that we documented, including the fact that elephants more...with stiff joints and chronic lameness were kept on the road and aggressive use of the bullhook. One scene depicts a Ringling trainer inflicting a bloody bullhook wound behind the left ear of an elephant. The elephant responds with a series of squeals. He is also an author, a lecturer, a producer, a publisher, a radio personality, a composer, an actor, the founder more...of Slamjamz Records, and, most importantly, a leader and activist whose followers span generations. Thankfully the passionate Public Enemy frontman has consistently been a voice for the people, telling it like it is and saying what others are often hesitant to say, making him dangerous to some and a hero to others. His lyrics cover topics like oppression, ignorance, empowerment, respect, and equality—all of which pertain to the animal rights movement, so naturally we couldn’t pass up the chance to pick his brain when we met up with him a while back. For nearly 10 months in 2002 and early 2003, a PETA investigator went undercover at an Iams contract testing laboratory and discovered a dark and sordid more...secret beneath the wholesome image of the dog- and cat-food manufacturer: dogs gone crazy from intense confinement to barren steel cages and cement cells, dogs left piled on a filthy paint-chipped floor after having chunks of muscle hacked from their thighs; dogs surgically debarked; horribly sick dogs and cats languishing in their cages, neglected and left to suffer with no veterinary care.
Iams lied to PETA with promises to improve the conditions for animals in its contract laboratories, even assuring us that enrichment programs were already in place, but our undercover investigator saw otherwise. She fought for six months to have a single cheap, rubber toy placed in each cold, lonely kennel. This is Iams’ idea of enrichment.
Our video footage shows Iams representatives touring the facility and witnessing dogs’ endless circling in barren cells, sweltering in the summer heat. Iams knew the truth yet did nothing to protect the animals.
The dogs and cats in Iams’ tests are no different from our dogs and cats at home when it comes to deserving companionship, play, a stimulating environment, and the right not to be tormented in painful experiments.
Luckily, caring consumers know that advances in nutrition don’t have to come at the expense of animals in labs. Help PETA force Iams to end these painful and unnecessary tests, as many compassionate companies have already done. less
