This song rocks, love the intro :-) From The Smiths last album, "Strangeways, Here We Come." The Smiths' song, written by the usual combination of Morrissey more...and Johnny Marr. The song was originally supposed to be released as a single and a music video was filmed, featuring scenes of the group-iconic Salford Lads Club and surrounding areas being bicycled through by the lads and friends. Because of a reference to "plan a mass murder" in one lyric it was banned from airplay by the BBC because of the then recent Hungerford massacre, so the band decided not to release it in the UK, however it was released in various other regions including North America, Europe, Australasia and Japan.
The track bears rather striking structural similarities to the track Frankenstein off the album New York Dolls by the New York Dolls. For example, both have a "chugging" style drumbeat and a similar rising chordal cadence (played on the guitar) as their introduction, the chordal progressions though out the songs are similar and both share almost identical closing instrumental lead guitar riffs. As Morrissey used to be head of the Dolls' UK fan club, it is likely that the similarities between the two tracks is not co-incidental. There would then be an added irony to the title of the song, as it could be interpretated as referring to listeners, telling them to stop Morrissey if they think they've heard the song before, this meaning lying over the line's contextual significance as part of the lyrics as a whole.
"Stop Me ..." was subsequently included on the compilation album Stop Me and on The Very Best of The Smiths. Copyrights belonging to The Smiths and all other current copyright holders including Sire Records.
