A friend of mine commented that this song is "dark and moody, desperate and lonesome with a glimmer of hope" and I think he nailed it.
Inspiration: more...I went through a severely depressed period when I had my heart broken badly about 20 years ago. The memory of that time is still with me and then I watched my cousin go through a very similar situation some years back. This new song was my attempt to capture the feelings I had at that time (don't ask me why the idea hit for the song me 20 years later!).
I have always hoped that nobody else would have to experience true heartbreak but I think it is a part of living. less

Love this song and the story behind it. The way I read it Young taught it to Furay when they first met in the early 60s. Then Furay taught it to Stills more...in New York. Then they went looking for Young in Toronto but couldn't find him. In 1966 Young and Palmer were driving a black hearse with ontario plates in Los Angeles looking for Stills and were leaving town when they were spotted by Stills and Furay in a Hollywood traffic jam. They were going in opposite directions and Stills and Furay honked and yelled until Young noticed and turned around to meet up. And the rest is rock less

It was recorded by more...the Shirelles and the Beatles, both of whom had hits with the song. The highest-charting version of "Baby It's You" was by the band Smith, who took the song to #5 on the US charts in 1969.
The Beatles performed "Baby It's You" as part of their stage act from 1961 until 1963. It was the only Burt Bacharach song the group covered. They recorded it on 11 February 1963 for their album Please Please Me along with "Boys", another Shirelles song.[1] American label Vee Jay Records included it on Introducing... The Beatles and Songs, Pictures And Stories Of the Fabulous Beatles. Capitol included it on The Early Beatles.

I found an alternate take I did on this song and I liked the vocal a slight bit better so I used it and added the background vocals (4 layers overdubbed). more...I literally just learned the song while recording this video.
Here's some info about 10cc and the song:
10cc were always bound to make it. All members were 60s veterans, with Graham Gouldman already having written a string of hits for bands as diverse as the Yardbirds and Herman's Hermits.
1975's album The Original Soundtrack broke the mould - it contained "I'm Not In Love". A gorgeously crafted arrangement that floated beneath the mock cynicism of the lyrics. Multi-layered backing vocals gave the whole thing an other-worldly quality that was only compounded by the extraordinary middle eight with its whispered "big boys don't cry" motif. It became a #1 that appealed both to the fans that wanted grown up pop and to people who wanted a slow dance at the end of the disco. less
