What can I say? It kills me that Shatner is not a part of the new movie, --but what's really bugging me is the production concept of the movie itself. The idea that even a gifted director like J.J.Abrams could cast any actors to fill the roles of
more...
the original cast is essentially flawed. The classic Enterprise crew is simply too iconic, too memorable and too specifically identified with those beloved actors to be replaced by stand-ins. No matter how talented the new kids are, the best they can hope to achieve is a credible impersonation.
People are not action figures. I can see how a fellow geek like J.J. could delude himself to think that talented people are interchangeable like toys, but it's not true. In his perfectly understandable Trekkie zeal, he has underestimated the importance of actors.
No matter how good a writer or director may be, actors --good actors--will always , ultimately define any role. Christopher Plummer's Henry V is not interchangeable with Kenneth Branagh's, or Olivier's, or Shatner's. Actors matter!
This is probably even more true about the role of Captain Kirk than any role in history. Think about it. On paper, Christopher Pike in The Menagerie is virtually indistinguishable from Kirk in any first season episode. The two captains are written identically. It is only the actors that make the two characters different. I've always thought Jeffrey Hunter's reading of Plke was fairly standard T.V. cowboy acting of the day. Not much better or worse than Captain Video or any number of guest stars on Wagon Train or Bonanza. I feel certain that Star Trek would never have become the cultural staple it became if Shatner had not replaced him.
Not everyone "gets" Shatner's stylized approach to the part, but it certainly was never "standard T.V. cowboy acting". The easy way he traversed from Kirk's broad, larger-than-life intensity to his brief moments of deeply genuine emotion in close-up was perfect for the role and the show. For one thing, everything about original Star Trek was highly stylized, from Roddenberry's idealized humanist vision of the future to every detail of creative theatrical production design that made it all fit into a tiny budget and on tiny screens all over the world. Shatner's choices with Kirk seem tailor -made for these specific challenges. He may have seemed too extreme to some, but Shatner made Kirk into a swashbuckling super-hero with an intimate, genuinely human core...

Forgive me for not knowing this but don't the Roddenberry's have a say in Star Trek anymore? Why can't they control who is in, or out of the movie.

Thank you so much Bill for the joy you brought me and the places you ecouraged my imagination to go, especially in your portrayal of James Kirk. You were and are Star Trek and the entire frachise owes you much more than they can ever deliver. As you

Captian James T Kirk will always be my very fondly remembered first crush at the tender age of ten, and to not have Bill playing him in some aspect of this new movie breaks my heart.
No William Shatner in the next trek movie is like having a birthday

I can't believe they would have Leonard Nimoy in the movie, but not William Shatner? That's a disgrace! Surely they could write it so there is room for both young Kirk and today's Kirk (hardly "old" Kirk, by the way). We who love Kirk, and specifically

Shatner as Kirk, don't care if he's "old" or gained weight or anything else like that. In fact, that only makes him more real, more believable and easier to relate to but it does not make him less of a hero. I happen to think Bill looks FANTASTIC today! How many guys can pass for 25 years younger than they chronologically are? Man, Denny Crane is HOT! They are making a HUGE mistake with this. I love Nimoy, but if Shatner is out, I won't be seeing this movie.

I have loved Star Trek since I was 16. That's forty years ago. I WON'T be watching the new film, because I think it is a massive insult to Bill and the fans, that he has not been included in the new film. I have a theory, though. Bill is a consummate

actor, with so much charisma . Those things helped make Star Trek popular and unforgettable. He also is able to skilfully work as part of an ensemble. However...I think that whoever is making this film is nervous..that the 'new' Captain Kirk, ( ???!!!) will not be popular, when having to 'compete' with Bill. Very stupid move ! Bill makes whatever he acts in - shine. He is an asset..an incredible asset, to any piece of drama. The decision to not include Bill is unintelligent and I think one not focused enough on the quality of the end product. Looks like yet another remake film cashing in on a genre. Well, Bill....perhaps you're better off out of it if it's going to be a turkey. The legend that is Bill Shatner 's work is unforgettable and will last..as is has done already, far longer than one badly planned movie. God knows what they'll do with Leonard. Probably, not a lot. I hope that you sit back, with a nice drink...and not give a turkey another thought, 'til Thanksgiving. Oh..loving Boston Legal ! Love to you all.

I agree with poster BostonLegalOrg, we should send this to the PTB's and let them see the depth of feeling generated here in just a few short days. If they want people to go see this 'ahem' movie, then they should include Bill as Kirk, nuff said.

Dear Mr shatner, the only way I could go and watch this Star Trek movie as a Kirk fan is by having the original Kirk with the original Spock talking about their past on some kind of flashback, so please as a fan of your work we need you to put the federation
