An author who claims Jerry Seinfeld's wife plagiarized her cookbook says she wasn't amused by jokes the comedian made last more...year on late-night television.
Missy Chase Lapine filed papers in federal court on Tuesday explaining her position for a December hearing. She claimed that her 7-year-old daughter was upset after Seinfeld joked on David Letterman's show that people with three names - James Earl Ray and Mark David Chapman, for instance - turned out to be assassins.
Lapine said she "never felt so frightened and vulnerable" as when her daughter came home from school "and asked, 'Mom, what is an assassin?'"
In a lawsuit filed last year, Lapine claimed Jessica Seinfeld got ideas for her cookbook, "Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food," from Lapine's book "The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids' Favorite Meals."
The Seinfelds' attorney said in a statement Wednesday: "As a comedian, Jerry has a right under the First Amendment to tell jokes. Ms. Lapine, on the other hand, was not joking when she maliciously accused Jessica Seinfeld, who also has young children, of plagiarism, a charge that is demonstrably false."
Earlier this year, lawyers for Jessica Seinfeld called the lawsuit opportunistic and accused Lapine of falsely claiming she invented the idea of hiding fruits and vegetables in children's meals as many other books and educational sources were utilizing it too.
In her affidavit, Lapine said she did not make accusations against Jessica Seinfeld to gain media attention or celebrity status. less

MillerCoors LLC said Wednesday it has signed a 15-year lease for office space in its new headquarters of Chicago, according to the Associated Press. The more...company - a joint venture of SABMiller's U.S. unit and Molson Coors Brewing Co. - said it will take over approximately 130,000 square feet of the building in June 2009. In an effort to save on costs, about 400 employees will work there - including senior executives, as well as employees in marketing, human resources, legal, finance and other divisions. Many of the employees will be shifted from SABMiller's U.S. headquarters in Milwaukee and Molson Coors' headquarters in Golden, Colo. About 150 will be coming from each city, spokesman Julian Green said. MillerCoors Chief Executive Leo Kiely said in a statement MillerCoors will also maintain "significant operations" in both those cities, and plans to make major investments in those breweries and stay connected to the communities. Food allergies in American children seem to be on the rise, affecting 3 million kids, according to the first federal more...study of the problem.
Experts tell the Associated Press this might be because parents are more aware of allergies, and quicker to have their kids checked out by a doctor.
About one in 26 children reported food allergies last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. That's up from one in 30 in 1997.
The 18 percent increase is significant enough to be considered more than a statistical blip, said Amy Branum of the CDC, the study's lead author.
Nobody knows for sure what's driving the increase. A doubling in peanut allergies — noted in earlier studies — is one factor, some experts said. Also, children seem to be taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies than they did in decades past.
But also figuring into the equation are parents and doctors who are more likely to consider food as the trigger for symptoms like vomiting, skin rashes and breathing problems.
In the past, parents and doctors might have just labeled a child “sickly,” rather than look for a cause such as a food allergy. less

Colonel Mike Hamm has submitted a letter of retirement to the state Department of Natural Resources, ending 36 years with the agency. For the past five years he has headed the division that enforces fish, game and other natural resources laws. Hamm's retirement came a day after he was allowed to read an investigative report about himself at a meeting with DNR Commissioner Mark Holsten and personnel director Denise Legato. The investigative report has not been made public. But an earlier Legislative Audit concluded that a conflict-of-interest law was broken and $300,000 in public money had been misspent on a week-long conference that featured a golf outing, fishing on Lake Mille Lacs, a fish fry and other entertainment. Hamm, who is 55 and eligible for retirement, has served in the DNR since 1972, first as a parks worker, and since 1977 as a conservation officer and supervisor. In May, he and his wife, Captain Cathy Hamm, a supervisor in the enforcement division, were placed on paid administrative leave during the investigations, which were prompted by a Star Tribune story about the conference spending. The resignation may be just the beginning of the shakeup at the DNR. Legato said several other DNR employees face investigations as a result of the investigative findings. less

The Michelin guide is published annually by the French tire company. The awarding of Michelin stars is the most important status symbol in international cuisine, and even receiving one star is considered an honor.

Union leaders are upset that The Providence Journal, the largest newspaper in Rhode Island, has failed to disclose to the public more...a plan to layoff 30 newsroom staffers made last month.
Tim Schick, administrator of The Providence Newspaper Guild, contends that the paper's failure to report on its own cuts -- expected to take place by Friday -- is hypocritical.
"There are a lot of questions about when they will be upfront with the public about what is going on," Schick told Editor & Publisher. "If it were any other business in the community, the Journal would be reporting it and seeking it out."
The layoff plan, announced to staff on September 24th, will eliminate 25 part-time newsroom staffers positions and five full-time positions, according to the union.
The union has revealed the layoff plan on its website, as has the alternative weekly The Phoenix.
"In the news business, you would think they would report the news as it occurs," Schick said. less
