I wish I could grow tomatoes in my yard... Lord! Have I tried. Just will not grow. The soil is almost solid clay.
I might try growing them in a hanging basket on the shady side of the fence (so the sun hits the tops but not the roots).

You may try growing tomatos and other veggies and herbs in a raised bed. Get some chemical-free wood and build your bed one to 3 feet above the ground...filled it with luxurious amended soil, with the proper PH for the tomatos, and plant! It's also easier

on your back, if you have to weed it.

Great idea...
I also have a ground hog problem in my yard (they have taken up residence under my cement porch) which adds another element. This is the first year and I tried everything to keep them out before they had babies. I think I may end up getting

some heavy duty wire mesh and anchor it to the ground, well out from the porch.

We've got major weeds in our yard, plus we're in a desert, so that's why we're "container" gardening. Hence the whiskey barrel with the Miracle-Gro potting soil.
You can also draoe the plants with light breathable fabric so diffuse the sunlight on them
more...
a bit, plus it wirks as a bird-barrier (one of my firstripe tomatoes got pecked before I veiled the plants).

Well, basically, we just stacked the deck in our favor as much as we could. We bought the plants as baby plants, and the cherry tomato already started fruiting before we could transfer it to the whiskey barrel!
We use Miracle-Gro potting soil, some
more...
granulated pumice to further aerate the soil, some Miracle-Gro plant food/fertilizer, and bone-meal for calcium.
Then, this being the Arizona desert, I just water the hell out of 'em.
The cherry tomato is extremely prolific, whereas the heatwave tomato is taking a little more time.
We never expected the plants to get as big as they did as we're newbies at this, so we planted them both in the one Whiskey barrel. the Cherry Tomato plant has really overrun the planter. So in the fall, when we expand our veggie gardening operation, each plant will get their own barrel.
I saw in your own video that you're having some difficulty in getting your pepper plants to produce. I have a bell pepper in a separate planter next to the tomatoes, and it, too, has been slow to fruit. Lotsa blossoms, but practically no fruit until this week. A bell pepper baby has emerged. So there may be hope on your end as well.

Swipe
Growing your own tomatoes is cool but they take some watering though. I guess some kind of irrigation system would be cool.

No kiddin' swipe. Especially here in Phx, AZ. Right now I just have the one planter and it gets a lot of hosing, but yeah, a watering system on some kind of timer would be ideal.

At Granny's we'd slice up the big ones and eat 'em with stewed tators, white corn, guloush, fried chicken and pole beans. yum

Catchy tune lol. I grow my own tomatoes as well during the summer months here in the UK, as our weather is not always great. Also grow a lot of fruit as well, apples, pears, strawberrys, black currents, and gooseberries. You cant beat home grown.

First time I heard that song was at a John Denver concert. He just picked his guitar and sang it. the audience applauded loudly. Then John Denver admitted, "I didn't write that song." Then he followed it up with " I was GONNA!"
