My Canada Day tribute. As July 1 fell on a Sunday this year, Canada Day is celebrated on July 2.... Well, it is and it isn't.... As usual with the beaurocratic more...mentality that made up "The Holiday Act", Canadians get July 2nd off "to celebrate Canada Day" Of course, all the celebrations are actually held on the 1st, so anyone who actually had to work... anyone making minimum wage in a store, restaurant, anyplace with any reason to be open on July 1st, doesn't get to celebrate with the resto Canadians. They get to "celebrate" on Monday, when there isn't anything going on.
However, a call to Consumer and Corporate Affairs, here in Ottawa, allows you to experience "Newspeak" up close and personal about how this is "good thing"... not of course for employees who have to work on July the 1st... for their employers! And, of course, the comfort of employees is secondary to the right of the employer to scrap $1.75 more out of the buying public. You will have to see my blog for the full conversation with the nameless flunkie at CAC. less
