Some of this reminds me of Flight Of The Navigator, an SF story about a kid who travels in an advanced metallic morphing space ship to a region known as Phaelon 5 (or something like that). The metallic forms certainly have that feel about them.

To me, these are thought forms. Maybe not at a primal level, but abstract social derivatives prior to manifestation on the plane of existence within the sphere of relative consciousness.
