Description:
"Having fun with the Bible" will hopefully be something that I can keep up for a while. There are so many aberrations in the Bible that it's hard not

Well, yes, that's correct. My family name also translates as "he who steers the ship". And in one of my previous professional incarnations, I was also the naval consultant for a trade publication.
I guess it's... "fate". ;-)

Hm. I wonder if it was a tidal wave, and perhaps not global. Like a local tidal wave, induced by the gravity of a comet, a moon, meteor...well you get the idea. My ration of religious thoughts has been consumed, so I'm afraid I won't have any thoughts

Hi MercOfSpeech,
Historically speaking, the story originates from the Epic of Gilgamesh, which chronicles an actual flood incident. This caused a tremendous loss of life and scarred an entire generation in the Persian Gulf (ancient Babylon). In that sense,

yes, it was a very localized event, so you're correct. It causes absolutely no problems. Coastline dwelling individuals have been living with floods since the dawn of time. But that's definitely not what Genesis states. And remember, the Bible is allegedly "inerrant".
From an organic perspective of the text, one can easily imagine how this historical event may have created the "global flood myth". Cultures at the time were in contact, these are tales which would have been exchanged (especially when it was such a catastrophy). It seems reasonable to think that had something like the Christmas Tsunami, a few years ago, taken place a few hundred years ago instead when technology wasn't as good and communication wasn't as efficient, it would have given birth to similar mythos.
People live on coastline, therefore they are affected by flooding. Many cultures do have flood mythology, but there's absolutely no reason to state that it was globalized or that these floods are all part of the same mega-flood. It is of course interesting to look at how flood conspiracy theorists will do this, by linking them all together, regardless of chronology. It of course bears no legitimacy.
Kind regards from the UK,
~Nils
