I think it's so great that you were able to connect with other members of your family especially with the pain you endured with the kind of relationship you had with your parents. I can't say that I understand that pain but I can understand the joy more...

embrace your dad, not with anger but with love,seems like he's made efforts,at least you have a dad that has made an effort (however little) to want to get to know you and you know what he looks like . 18 years years might be left empty but you can clean more...

Boy, do I understand this. My daughter went through the same thing and is about 24 years old now and still sad about it. Her Dad was an alcoholic I had to throw out of the house to protect her.
