It looks like the quality was poor to start with. MPEG is a lossy compression. The compressor decides what to throw out of the image. And since it was mini DVD, it was probably compressing too much in order to store more footage on the mini DVD.
If the

quality your Panasonic is giving you is better, that shows it throws out less data when compressing.
I was just trying to let you know that .VOB uses MPEG compression, just like .mpg, not implying the quality of both cameras would be the same.
It looks like you made the right decision in returning the first camera and getting the second.

Nero Vision can import individual VOB files, Sony Vegas can import the entire disk containing them. Both Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere Pro can import the files if you rename them to .mpg. Those are the most commonly used decent editors (well, the Vegas

and Premiere are decent one, Nero is just an OK one).

I use PP2. you have to manually change the extension. The quality goes down the pooper.

Here is a secret: VOB files are MPG files that can contain more than one soundtrack. In most cases all you have to do is rename them to something with an .mpg extension.
At any rate, just about every decent video editor can read them.

No. Almost no editor can read .vob files. If you use the renaming trick, it works, but any quality goes out the window.
