"...Just the other day, I was speaking to someone, who coincidentally voted for Obama. This bozo informed me that falling more...gas prices was just a conspiracy by oil companies to help elect John McCain. He didn't realize that real demand was falling for oil because the economy was sliding into recession. He didn't realize that falling prices can be an indicator of deflation. I informed him that we may be headed into deflation. He replied simply, quote-unquote "GOOD" as if to imply that he thought deflation being the opposite of inflation being inherently evil meant that deflation could only be the opposite. I didn't go into a discussion about how Deflation is actually worse than inflation. That's heresy to people like him. After all, his world is still flat and he might come to fisticuffs if I attempt to tell him it's round. With Deflation, Yes, prices go down, but the nasty thing is that this includes the 'price' someone can pay for your labor. Fixed Debts like Mortgages and Car payments do not go down.Demand for goods fall. It doesn't matter if gas drops to, say, $2.00. If layoffs happen in good industries due to decreased demand, those forced out will eventually accept jobs that don't pay as much. Prices plunge further, forcing more unemployment, Wash, Rinse, Repeat. $2.00 gas ends up costing more in relative terms when one only makes 1/3 or 1/4 of what they were when gas was $4.00. falling prices cause many industries to cut production on unfinished goods because cost to finish them is sometimes than what they can be sold for. During the Depression, farmers plowed fields under, they dumped milk onto the ground. They don't call Economics the dismal Science for no reason..." less
