Ryan, directed by Chris Landreth, is an animated tribute to Canadian animator Ryan Larkin. Thirty years ago, at the National Film Board of Canada, Ryan produced some of the most influential animated films of his time.
In Ryan we hear the voice of Ryan Larkin and people who have known him, but these voices speak through strange, twisted, broken and disembodied 3D generated characters... people whose appearances are bizarre, humorous or disturbing. Although incredibly realistic and detailed, Ryan was created and animated without the use of live action footage, rotoscoping or motion capture...but instead from an original, personal, hand animated three-dimensional world which Chris calls 'psychological realism'.
A world encapsulated in the words of Anais Nin:

I just returned from Guilin and enjoyed it very much. Yangshuo a most interesting grand scale performance is put on. It is produced and directed by Yimou more...Zhang, of whom I was told over and over, is very famous! They use over five hundred local people, keeping the minority folk songs and traditions alive. This is done on a grand scale on the banks of the Liu River, just below the peaks. The stage is the river and the 12 peaks behind; at least one kilometre by two kilometres' is the grand scale of the spectacle. It is done very artistically and well worth seeing. The use of the local fishermen is very creative. It's worth to see. The last shows are use of 400 people who are wearing the electric light on their body. That's was amazing! less
