Mesenchymal stem cells are very unique, as pointed out in this video, because they have the ability to dampen pathological immune responses. There are numerous papers such as

that support the use of mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes.
This video points out the interesting and often understated observation that mesenchymal stem cells induce generation of CD4 CD25 T regulatory cells, which can in a specific manner block immune responses against "self". In fact, patients with autoimmune diseases often have low numbers of these cells and when they go into remission, the numbers of these cells rise.
Based on this, and the fact that mesenchymal stem cells promote tissue regeneration, it seems like mesenchymal stem cell therapy would be a unique and novel way to target diseases associated with immune deregulation.
