~Spin Those Wheels ~
Kenny always had this thing for wheels. Turning more...wheels.
I could be working on my car for hours and never see his face. Which was good. I didn’t want him getting hit by a flying wrench, or kicked as I lay across the fender, head buried under the hood trying to tighten that last bolt.
But change a tire or work on the brakes? He was right there, hand pressed flat against the sidewall, trying to spin it. That would have been the ’56 Buick with the big white sidewalls.
I can still see him kneeling on the driver’s seat, leaning on the horn ring while trying to turn that big ass steering wheel. Nighttime was his favorite time to ride in that car, because it was quiet out, and he could hear the sound of the tires on the road as we drove with the windows open.
I can still remember one of the first times he borrowed my car, right after he got his license. Later in the day, I found the jack loose in the trunk. When I asked him about it, he said he had to change a tire because it was low on air. I guess he was too embarrassed to tell me about it, because when he got home and checked it with an air gauge, it was fine. I think he just wanted to spin the wheels.
When school didn’t work out for him, I told him, “Either you go to school, or get a job and start paying your own bills.” So he started working on the loading dock with me. He was a good worker, but he was always watching the trucks coming into the dock and talking with the drivers about rolling down the road.
The next thing I knew, he’d talked the boss into letting him go out with the drivers, because that’s what he wanted to do – learn to drive a semi. I heard him joking with a friend, once, about how it was appropriate that he was reading Heinlein’s “The Roads Must Roll”. I never could figure that out. What did moving roads have to do with wheels turning? But that was him and his science fiction. I reminded him that the story sounded anti-union, anyway.
So, driving and wheels turning are what got him to stick out the job and stay in the union. He’s been driving all this time, and now he just retired. We went through some old family pictures for the retirement party, and I found this one. It was Christmas, and he was three years old. The first thing he did when he picked up that bus was to spin those wheels. less
