The trouble with unions has two sides. I know of a union that is so lax, that it just goes along with everything the company wants to do - which is basically screwing their employees out of many things they already had the right to.
The very worst side
more...
of unions is when they wield their power so heavily that lives are, in fact, ruined - or at least screwed up for a long time. I have personally been on the receiving end of such a union and it put me off union abuse of might for ever.
That said, I have been a very active union rep, myself. But that was a union that had the ethics I agreed with.
Abuse of power is never a good thing - no matter who the abuser is.

Great vlog...could not agree with you more!
If people who are against unions would just realize that even they gained threw the efforts and fights of unions...Unions helped to raise the general conciseness about more just working conditions. But, no

The union situation in the Uk is probably a different. though Maggie Thatcher did break the power of the unions to some degree back in the 1980's.
Our unions don't have to provide medical insurance cover because of the NHS.
I belonged to a union while

nursing because they covered me if I was ever sued. I could never have been able to pay any amount of damages if liable. They would have represented me if I had to face a disciplinary hearing either at my place of work or before the national professional body. Again, I would never have been able to pay the lawyer's fees for any of that. The union covered it all.
So yes, please think through what a union takes responsibility for - it's worth that little bit out of your wages.

"Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking with the union..." (everybody sing along).
Well, actually, I haven't had the opportunity to be in a union for a number of years, but I used to be, and would again in the right situation.
People don't understand how

so much of what they take for granted (40 hour week, sick leave, no child labor) were won for them by unions.

"What have you done for me lately?" is a common refrain.
Say, do you get a present on both Boss's Day and Secretary's Day?

You are so not 54! Man you look young.
My husband is in a Union, and our medical is covered, however they did have to cut costs and we take care of our own vision as of last year, but all in all, he is vested and retirement will be easier for us. I have

a couple 401k's, however I think a third of my money goes to investor fee's..if Syd below is in the Teachers Union...that is impressive, since they have some big $$$...little do people know..it's one of the best! They deserve every penny. Let's hope hubby's Union invests wisely for us!!

My family has a long history of union-membership. I'm a member of one of the largest in the U.S. and my local union ROCKS!
Just a few more facts to ponder from The Economic Policy Institute (http://www.epi.org/):
• Unions raise wages of unionized workers

by roughly 20% and raise compensation, including both wages and benefits, by about 28%.
• Unions reduce wage inequality because they raise wages more for low- and middle-wage workers than for higher-wage workers, more for blue-collar than for white-collar workers, and more for workers who do not have a college degree.
• Strong unions set a pay standard that nonunion employers follow. For example, a high school graduate whose workplace is not unionized but whose industry is 25% unionized is paid 5% more than similar workers in less unionized industries.
• The impact of unions on total nonunion wages is almost as large as the impact on total union wages.
• The most sweeping advantage for unionized workers is in fringe benefits. Unionized workers are more likely than their non-unionized counterparts to receive paid leave, are approximately 18% to 28% more likely to have employer-provided health insurance, and are 23% to 54% more likely to be in employer-provided pension plans.
• Unionized workers receive more generous health benefits than non-unionized workers. They also pay 18% lower health care deductibles and a smaller share of the costs for family coverage. In retirement, unionized workers are 24% more likely to be covered by health insurance paid for by their employer.
• Unionized workers receive better pension plans. Not only are they more likely to have a guaranteed benefit in retirement, their employers contribute 28% more toward pensions.
• Unionized workers receive 26% more vacation time and 14% more total paid leave (vacations and holidays).
