I'm wondering what the thought is behind having those two fingers on the gloves sewn together. First time I've heard of that.

I don't know how realistic it is, but it seems plausible to me. Essentially the pinkie is a very weak finger, while the ring finger isn't So they use the ring finger to stabilize the pinkie in a crash, kinda like a pre-splint.
