Wow what an experience! It's good that you weren't really sure exactly what was happening at the time because you probably would have been really nervous. It's also so nice that you got a piece of the wall! You have your own little piece of history!

I was pretty rattled when I learned all the facts about what happened that day. Glad I was young and nieve.

I was surprised to witness a part of history. I only wish it had been a happy event.

Good thing that they decided to let you pass, because, 'Comrade Nan' just doesn't roll off the tongue like 'SisterNan' does.

It may have been fortunate that your exchange parents had YOU with them... being American, I doubt the East Germans would have wanted the politcal repercussions.
I had a pen pal in Markstein during that time and she spoke about it quite a bit. Great

Glad you told that story.
I remeber the day when the wall was built while on vacation in italy in 1961 august i think 13.
In a tent camp we had lots of discussions about it with students who semed to have the facts all wrong. They thought West Germany

built that wall.
Thanks god, thats history now. The Fathers of the downfall range form Russia to America and germany. To most unknown, the polish pope played his part to in the downfall of the iron curtain. I was in Berlin in times of the wall and after. The first thing i dit walk through the Brandeburg Tor where before was barbed wire and the wall. A very emotional moment to me.
In times of the wall i blankly refused to visit any eastern country, toda i can travel free thanks to the EU. I have seen beautiful things developing in former East German Dresden and Poland Breslau, see the films in my album Germany
Great Vlog that was a joy to watch instead of all the Drama

Georg, I'm thrilled with your response. I think many of the younger generation take the EU for granted and don't realize what personal sacrifices were given for us to get there.
