Description:
Here is the overview of the editing software that I use to do all my video compositing. In fact, I used that very software to edit THIS video! I do
more...
these vlogs very extemporaneously so what is actually up behind me on the greenscreen was decided upon in the editing phase. This software enables me to work pretty fast and loos, so I can just throw everything into a vlog but the kitchen sink (The kitchen sink being hidden behind the greenscreen canvas).

Ive just downloaded the software onto my computer and I watched yours and terrys video to how you create your videos and I throughly enjoyed them and it helped me to understand the programme better. Ive got 30 days left so I was wondering is it worth

buying it online??

I'm gonna go ahead and say yes, because I use this program extensively. All the greenscreen compositing work you've seen in my "show" videos has been done in MAGIX, and I love editing with it, too. I can put shots and audio wherever I want them very
more...
quickly without any hassle, and I get to preview in real time.
Now I live in a big city so I puchased MAGIX right off the shelf. In fact, I've enjoyed the program SO much, that I bought the later version of it from the one you see me use here, so I have version 14 now, just like TerryBubble.

This is the same exact version I use for my videos. That's what I did with this one that's attached. The extra Scruffy's that pop out the sides with "Fuck yeah!" but you'll notice it's off-sync on the middle part with the pop-ups because my computer
more...
started slowing down (damn you, LimeWire!).
In any case, I just use a green posterboard tacked up on a wall in my room.. :P And an old hospital laptop stand for my camera. I won't brag or boast, but I will admit that once I got MAGIX (thanks to TerryBubble for recommending it), I watched his short green-screen tutorial he made, and I picked it right up.
As for me, I usually do my vocals and puppeteering at the same time. When it comes to music videos, I usually do the puppet part first, then add the music later and make sure it all syncs up the way it should.
And I know what you mean with the slideshow musicals.. those are annoying. Even the music videos I've made with the clips aren't considered slideshows, but it's not just pictures.. sort of. Well, if you count all the frames involved in the animation, then sure... but yeah. Great vid, sir.

Yeah see, I didn't use to try that.. The first time I did anything related to lip-syncing was that Team America video, where I just moved my mouth when they sang.. then I tried it on an actual speaking thing (I used my camera to record audio clips, too)
and that didn't work so well because I lost track of what words I was using.. then when I recorded "Rollin Home" I actually had the song play in the background so I can move the puppet's mouth while they sang, then as you mentioned, I used the wavelengths to match them up together, then just slid the volume bar of the video down so it was muted. After I put the music together, of course.. :P Magix is so incredibly easy, I feel like I'm missing something.. :P

You know? If yo uhadn't mentioned the off-sync parts, I never would have noticed--and it STILL isn't noticeable! But I can see where it could be a potential problem because4 when you start adding Special effects layers like Chroma_key ("Greenbox" in
more...
MAGIX) it causes the playback on the editor to become choppy and delayed. This is why lip-synching to an audoble track while videotaping can save you, because all yyou have to do is match up the accompanying waveform on your performance to the matching segments of your original song track. So while playback will suck, your rendered product will work splendidly.

Well, let's just forget about Special Effects per se for the moment... Come up with the story you want to tell FIRST. That will determine your effects needs. You may just only need to do make-up and blood effects, and yo udon't really need a computer
more...
for that. That's the fun of making horror, doing the actual physical gags.
For my Tyrannovision series, my special effects are more out of necessity and economy than for the sheer spectacle of it. They are the way I build my "Sets" so I don't have to physically build and light a full-scale set. Then I do whatever it takes to service the plotline and the jokes--it's ALWAYS about the jokes! LOL
Effects do not necessarily a movie make. But they have become a more necessary means to an end. Back when I was your age and and we were still coexisting with dinosaurs and living in caves, wearing animals skins, Special effects were a more costly element for a movie. Now with digital technology, they actually SAVE money now!
But also, when I was your age, I was making my own little experimental short films with wahtever crude method of making movie magic I had to entertain and amuse my friends. In many ways, it helped MAKE me a lot of friends out of people who wouldn't ordinarily choose to BE my friend. So I can totally rerlate to where you're at.
So the FIRST lesson I'm gonna teach you is to do what I did at your age. Study movies like crazy, especially older, pre0digital age stuff, and take in as much material on the making of movies as yo9 ucan get your hands on. Read about how the Big Boys do it, then look at the resources that you have available to you and see if you can invent a way to pull off the same effect yourself. Don't get too hung up on doiong things the supposed "right" way. Do them the WRONG way if it will get the job done!
Watch DVD's that have commentaries and behind the scenes documentaries on them! Those are Film Schools on a Disk! Get every Robert Rodriguez movie with commetary that you can get your hands on --and that would be every one except the first "Spy Kids" movie. Start with "El Mariachi" and work your way forward to "Sin City". Because, just like you and me, Chris, he started out as a kid making movies at home with his family and friends.
You're already part of a grand tradition.
And do like everyone else does: message me directly for specific input on your projects.

I keep forgetting to point this out, but I promies to put it in a more involved tutorial about chroma-keying....
If you Right-Click on the clip you want to apply an effect to, you will get a selection of options, including "Video Effects". It's faster
more...
that way, and I don't hafta click out of my clip folders to get at the effects. I also select "Video Cleaning" from that same procedure, to tweak brightness, contrast and color.

If you have this program, Chris, all you need to really know is the aspects of layering. Top layer is farthest behind everything else. Best thing to do on that, like he said, just have a simple background or whatever, then go ahead and start putting
more...
things in the timeline under the other stuff, or in other words, put something on layer, then put something else in the layer below that, and it winds up being on top when you preview. And Baron, you should've pointed out that little menu up top of how to get to the Chroma Key/Green Screen effect. Also saves new users heaps of time. When I watched Terry do it, that's how I found it.

One correction to your very generous grocery list there:
I don't really do any 3D stuff. I try to fake it in 2D.
Also, why WAIT until you're OLDER to make a horror movie? Make one NOW if that's what you want! They're a lotta fun!

I just downloaded vs. 12 last night, played with it a bit and the preview plays a bit choppy. Will more RAM help solve this? I have 1G in now.... Thanks!

Downloaded the E-version, (demo plus the activation code). I'm impatient with shipping and the local software selection sucks.

For me --and I only have 1 gig of RAM, too-- the playback is smooth until you start compositing effects. When yo ustart adding in tracks with a whole bunch of effects data, that's more of a tax on the memory than just footage in no effects mode. When
more...
you render it all it will move smoothly.

You made learning fun again!
the look of Mxix is very much like Sony vegas pro 7
only the timeline is at the top that seems to be the only thing I can see that's different anyway.
Great video Sir Dixon

YEAH, Kris! What the puppet said! There are a lotta Vegas users out there, and you are doing some very respectable work on your end. The best tutorials are the ones that come from everyday users like yourself.

Magix looks very much like the software that we use at the TV station for our commercial and original content editing. Thanks again.

I usually render mine as one big composite, but I've never had that problem.. then again, that might also be why my "Fuck Yeah" part in that Team America video went crazy.. but that's the only time it's ever happened.. O_o

It's not so much that I enjoy wearing that particular costume, it's just that the last three Production Vlogs were all shot as one session while I was shooting the guards scenes. I just broke it up into three separate tutorials.

My Advice: DON'T render your entire video as a composite. Just render the individual shots as uncompressed video. Then edit those shots together as your music video, THEN render that assembly. When you do it in small chunks like that you lessen the
more...
risk of things going awry in the render.
