I spent 10 years teaching college level business classes in a women's prison. I learned more than they did. Even some felons can be changed if you believe in them and demonstrate how to make a difference in society.

...definitely one of my goals this year is to reactivate my activism (I've let that horrid alienated feeling my government has manipulated me into feeling get the best of me), so we'll see what happens.

Syd, You are a rare and dying breed. I wish more teachers would conduct themselves as you do. As I tried to do. I have a subsitute teaching certification but do not use it, as I would be one of those you have shown a news release about. I have always more...believed that teachers should inspire a student to think for themselves and not pour the accepted party line crap down there throats and expect them to parrot it back to me on a test and quizes. I tried teaching a few classes and got caught in a crossfire of parents and teachers. The parents wanted to have me fired for allowing the kids, 8th graders, to research aparthied and write a paper about it expressing there views. Some of the papers were rather distrubing and when I questioned the kids about there facts and research. I got alot of, my folks told me this or my grandpa said this. When I challenged them to find out if what they were told was true The Sh** hit the fan. I had parents coming to me and accussing me of calling them liers, when what really happened is the kids found facts that did not support the parents information and when he kids questioned the parents, it all went south quickly. I did not in anyway express any views I had on the subject, but got the kids to find out for themselves what was real and then I was accuse of pisioning the kids against there parents. The other teacher in private told I did the right thing, but when it came time to face the parents I stood alone and very much a scape goat. The principle of the school would not fire me though and told the parents that I was right in my actions and that he support me 100%. I at least had his backing. But you know how far that goes when the principle is given a choice to let me go or get fired himself. I didn't let him get to that though and left of my own free will. I did publish a public statment that I bought space and had a newspaper print for me.
This all happened in 1980 and in the deep south of the US it was not a popular topic. I wish you all the best in you teaching career and hope you never run into something like this. I have the paepr stored some where , and if I can find it I will send a copy to you.
