Alex, whether some footage is good or bad is not determined just by the technical quality of the equipment used. It was nice because it was interesting.
You did the best you could given the equipment you had, the available light, and the fact it caught
more...
you totally by surprise (which is clear from the sound).
Now, if you were making a movie and this was a scene you had time to prepare for and set up, then I might be more critical of it (well, heck, then I
would
be more critical). But given that you were just trying to capture a moment, you did better than most. You did not just point and shoot without thinking (as an average person would), you had the presence of mind to think about composition and about zooming in on the birds properly. So don't be too harsh on yourself.
It was nice that you were able to capture the birds. It was also nice that you shared it with us.

They are cranes. They might be sandhill cranes but I'm not quite sure..:-)
