I could see where sombody might use that to explaine it but it's misleading information I think. You could expline it either way and it's not going to make a difference to the student. But mecanically, the plates are disengaged from each other when
more...
the lever is pulled in. I would consider that disengaged. When you release the lever the plats all engage each other and the transmission. I would call that engaged. Here is a dictionary defination: "Engaged" in gear; inter locked; meshed. The meshed or interlocked part would refer to the plates meshing with each other in an interlocked position. Therefore, lever released is interlocked, meshed, or engaged. See what I mean?

Actually, I believe that when you hold the clutch in it's engaged. And then when you disengage the clutch it engages your gear. But I'm not doing a learning to ride video so... :P

AAAhhhhhgggghhh!, Well, it's not! There are multiple plates inside the clutch baskit and when you pul the clutch in to the handle bar you are causeing all of them disks to disengage them selves. When you release, you are causeing the springs inside
more...
the baskit to squish these disks togather there by engaging them with each other and also engageing the engine to the final drive. TRUTH!!
