Much can be said of the terrible treatment experienced by the original inhabitants of America, and much more can be felt. I wanted to add a few more things to my previous comment. The conduct of those who came to this continent was, to put it mildly,

contrary to the way things had been customarily done. It was far worse than mearly uncustomary, it was unlawful according to their own standards and laws. Some of those who came to this land brought with them their customary and lawful way of doing things. But, they did not apply these standards and laws towards the inhabitants of this land. One example of this, is that they did not pay the original inhabitants for their land!!!! It wasn't just customary to pay a homeowner or landowner for their land, it was a crime not too. But, those who brought these ways with them didn't apply them in their dealings with the native people of this land. It appears that they simply murdered them and stole their land, or cruely drove them off their land, as if they were cattle, and took occupancy of their land. Some may have thought that these original inhabitants of the land had ways that were so foreign that they were not accepted or not understood and appreciated. These original inhabitants were content to gather what they needed from the land. The concept of some people owning the Earth and paying these people for the oportunity to construct a dwelling and live on this parcel of land was foreign to the original inhabitants. Perhaps they concluded that the Earth provided all these things for free. Everything grows out of the Earth at no cost, and should be freely available. This is an extremely civilized view to me. It's too bad everyone doesn't have this view. In any case, the way in which the original inhabitance were treated by those, who came to this continent, was contrary to their own customary way, and lawful way, of dealing with each other and others. It's terribly sad that Native American's experienced such cruel and unjust treatment.

I love this Diana! Beautiful poetry and beautiful images. It's too bad there is a need for so much healing in all of us. We long for justice, fairness, and righteousness, and our tears have cried out, and it seems no one answers. Perhaps, in part,

Thanks David, what you have said is so true in many ways, there is much healing to be done within each of our own selves, but it can never be, as long as the many broken promises remain to be lies, and genicide still is happening to my people even today...

Thanks for stopping by David and for your nice comments, have a great week David..

beautifully done and very easing. I sometimes wish that we could take back all that was done to the true americans.. but, we learn as we grow.

My friend, we can never take back what has already been done, but as you said, we can learn from our mistakes and be a better people from this... There is still much that happens today to our people that is hushed up, the gov't. is still committing genocide,

but we will fight to the very end...

Assuming that he had reached the Indies, Columbus called the people on the islands his ships visited "indios," or "Indians," and the misnomer has stuck ever since. It is natural that people have proposed alternative names, whether to avoid confusion

between the inhabitants of America and India or to indicate respect for the original occupants of the American continents. Thus Native American has become widely established in American English, being acceptable in all contemporary contexts and preferred in many. However, the acceptance of Native American has not brought about the demise of Indian, despite persistent criticism.
