Description:
A little song about condescension. I wrote it awhile ago, but CoquiDave's comments about false admiration reminded me of it.

Hi silentmiaow, I find the videos you make very interesting and you raise some important issues that have really made me think-enough to have a 2 hour long discussion about Disability with my boyfriend after watching them, especially 'In my language'
which I really think you should enter into some short film festivals, or have you done that before? I work as a photographic 'facilitator' running workshops in which people with learning disabilities (UK term for special needs) can create images of themselves (using proffesional photographic equipment) how they'd like to be seen not as others would have them seen, promoting self-advocacy and freedom of speech. I also try to make films also speaking for advocacy and the right for people who are disabled by society to be accepted for who they are, although those films cannot be shown on here or youtube yet due to release issues. I'm not trying to say how great I am for doing this-merely trying to give you my background, why I am interested in what you say and why I am writing to you. I have done quite a bit of reading about Disability the social and medical models, also about the representation of Disability, have you read "The Creatures time forgot-photography and disability imagery" by David Hevey? It's a very interesting book, but then I guess if you arent interested in photography you may not have read it. Anyway, just wanted to say Hi, youtube didn't seem to let me write much and after following periurban (and hoping you would be here to) I found you here, so thought I would write a bit more. Hope you are well, Claire

I've heard OF "The Creatures Time Forgot", but I never got a chance to read it.

Hi SilentMiaow,An excellent song to try to help people understand. Don't know if it's the computer generated voice that did it, or if this is your true feeling, but I sensed bitterness in there towards folks who don't understand your problems. If

it WAS bitterness, I can understand it, but hope you can give folks a break. When I was first home after my injury, I went out to dinner with my fiancee at the time, and because of my spasticity, (which was FAR more severe than it is now, with my spasms making me knee myself in the face sometimes, kick things like the table leg HARD, (I've broken bones in my feet more times than I can count,) the waitress automatically assumed there was something wrong with my mind. I've learned over the years to, even though I'm still not an outgoing person, quickly dispel that impression in the first phases of a conversation with people I do interact with. You're doing that now, and not all praise given you is false admiration or condescension. I'm in a little bit different situation than most, but hell, I'm impressed by you. NOT by your ability to think, but by the toughness, perseverance, and creativity in learning to communicate out "our" terms so that "we" can understand you. (These terms referring to folks who don't have problems with their communication skills.)Then again, I'm impressed by the perseverance, toughness, and creativity of anyone who overcomes big obstacles in their lives to adapt, rather than give up and give in to society's limited expectations of them. I admire that stubborn demand for independence, respect, and as much self reliance as the person's problems allow, whether it's some form of disability, or something like someone poor working their way through college to improve their situation and "station" in life. That is always inspirational to me, and helps ME to carry on myself. :-) Of course, I've got this little "pride" thing as part of my nature that looks at others dealing with difficult situations and overcoming them rather than letting life kick their ass, and if others can do that, I'll be damned if I'll let life kick my ass either. LOL...Dave

OK... I got it wrong, and stand corrected. Gotta be a first for that sometime, huh? LOL...Sorry about the computer voice vs. your own. Oh, damn! That makes two in one day! Ah, perfection is lost!Oh, wait... to err is human, thus I am still

I actually meant by it, the same thing you mean when you talk about false admiration in some of your videos. Not people who genuinely are interested in me as a person, but the sort of thing where people are just going "Wow how amazing you are."I do

have a bit of a sarcastic way of presenting it in this song (which is my own voice, not a computer one), but bitterness isn't generally one of my problems.

Wow, that was so good. It really gets the point across of what it is like to be patronized and excluded at the same time. Great job!
