I've always figured smaller is better as a learning machine. Bags of torque can be a potential hazard for a beginner. But as you say, it totally depends on the individual. Some people are quick learners, some more responsible than others, and some just

have a knack for it. In my perfect world, everyone would spend a year or two playing around on a dirt bike before hitting the road, but that ain't the real world!

You know, I've never seen an entire 3 minute vlog take place at ONLY a stoplight. Thats impressive...

i am strongly against supersport bikes first bikes, not just because of how fast they are, but because of the ergonomics of them are not the best to learn on. there is no way your going to learn balance and low speed manuevering as well on that thing

versus a ninja650 or sv650 (naked), or a ninja250 etc.

good topic. I don't think everyone needs to start on a 250. I started on my ninja 650, and I'd say it's been perfect. I use it a lot on the highway where the 250 would have trouble matching the speed of traffic, and would fail going uphill.
It's a great

bike, and it's lasted me more than the 1yr newbie period. I'll probably keep it for another 3-4.. (probably) ;)

i agree with that, i think the power delivery and riding position of the ninja650 would make it a good bike to learn on or grow on. it has a bit much torque down low i guess it could get someone into trouble but mostly its ok for beginner i think

If they choose the wrong bike, it could be their last one and their first one! :)

regardless of brand/model I'm starting to think the UK has the best idea.. mandatory time period on a 125/250 bike before they can ride larger cc bikes. once that period is over they take a test on a larger bike and only then can the rider get their

dream liter bike.
i know a lot of folks on here will disagree with that but...
almost all the sport bikes i see have some degree of battle wounds and talking to people who have started out on sport bikes (and generally have battle wounds either on themselves or on the bike) make me want to have a timer for bodies per day.

I/We live in a country that has people who want the freedom to not wear helmets. I really don't give two rips if people shred their brain matter on the pavement.. What I do care about is increasing insurance rates and the inability of the average driver

to pay attention because the tests for both driving and riding are pathetic.
The fact that the average speeds are higher in the UK and Europe than in the US and the death rate is lower, says to me that is definitely improving things. Yes, I know some states have stretches of fast road, but on average Europe/UK is faster (or was when I was there last).
I do agree with the weight/power idea, but that would would complicate things really quickly because of models. An easier method would be to just say "Right, you can't go on the highway" or "Until you have this many miles of experience, you have a vehicle that can't go over x MPH". I know that will be as popular as a genital wart, but if i remember, most accidents happen within the first year (I forget the miles) of driving/riding, so doesn't it make sense to limit the amount of damage that can be done?
It's like the freedom to have guns.. When a tragedy happens, people say "Oh no, another kid blew his classmates away..." because a) either his parents were too dumb to have guns b) the freedom to have guns needs to be protected at all costs c) we needed those bodies for the body farm and tests, so it's actually a good thing.
everything can be justified or brought down into a "well, it's a good theory, but..." but at the end of the day, if as humans we want to change how things are, we need to get out collective thumb out and just accept that guns kill people, people are shitty riders and drivers, mainly because of a lack of standard quality instruction.

I think it's a good idea in theory, like communism really is a good idea, in theory. Problem is this, according to Fud's last research, you're 40x more likely to die in a bike crash in the UK than in a car. 43x in the states. So it's not really helping

THAT much.
That said, I do agree, mostly. Not with displacement though. Limit HP/Tq, as thats what matters most. Weight has a bit to do with it, but I think something with 35hp makes a good starter. Will go fast enough to use the interstate if absolutely necissary, and accelerates decently. There's a few bigger motor bikes (like the S40) that only have that much power.
