why bother replacing it when someone could do exactly what you did, and cut the helmet off and replace the $3 strap?

well it's true that someone could do that, but a helmet lock seems like a big enough determent for most people. "most" people don't carry knives or scissors on them too, around here anyway

It probably uses a cam over mechanism at the end of the lock cylinder. This is so someone can't use a pliers or other tool to force back the rod. Sounds like it's broke where the cam is attached to the cylinder or some of the tumblers broke/jammed. Pretty more...
