the song near the beginning/middle is just harsh...interesting points of view though. i like how you hear about the war from all kinds of angles by the soldiers.

It certainly is harsh... I think that's a polite understatement. It is effectively used as part of the boot camp brainwashing techniques. As they indicate, it all just becomes a reflex action.
