The Cave Paintings of The Spider Caves (Cuevas de la Araña) is the third in a series of hike more...videos Rafa and I will be doing in the Macizo Del Caroig area of the Valencian Community of Spain. This video is situated just inside the Meula de Cortes nature reserve and showcases the incredible pictorial scenes in the Spider Caves, that are expected to be somewhere between 7000 and 8000 years old. There are 3 main themes in the paintings, the hunting of wild goats, dance and the theme that these paintings are most famous for, the collecting of honey! There’s more on this in the video.
The Cave Paintings of the Spider Caves have been protected by the UNESCO, an international organization dedicated to the preservation of culture. UNESCO declared the paintings part of the Heritage of Mankind in December of 1998.
The Macizo Del Caroig area is situated in the Valencian community and alongside the Meula de Cortes nature reserve, it consists of 23 mountain villages surrounded by beautiful untouched mountain pine forests, in an area of 1.385 km2 aprox. There are a large number of mountain rivers, streams and caves with prehistoric cave paintings to explore via the varies walking and cycle paths.
For more info and photos of the area see http://www.caroig.com Note: This site is currently (at the time of writing) only in Spanish!
The video was originally filmed on the 29 of July 2007 and was edited on and off until it’s upload date. less
