for the better? probably not. i know what you mean about new cars. i used to service my own, and now i don't bother, which is bad, because i almost forget such basics as oil and air filter changes! (never used to.) i had a couple of clunkers like what
more...
you described. it's amazing the level of intimacy you achieve with these machines - knowing every little way to poke and stroke them just to get the damned things started!! i miss them though, and the times they lived in. :)

I follow in your footsteps starting 1n 1944. I am in Canada but had a 1960 Morris Oxford that refused to start when it rained and I would crank it. Quick summary, radio after supper then tv that faded in and out, colour tv, stereo 8 track, cassette decks,

vinyl records, cds, pong, Atari, 8086 PC,386,486, Pentium, party line telephone, single line phone, cordless, cellular. Technology snowballs. Knowledge built on knowledge newer. bigger, better, faster. The future holds awesome surprises.
