The Earth From Above: An Aerial Portrait of Our Planet. Towards a Sustainable Development” exhibition by world renowned French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand is organized as part of “The Annual Bangkok Art & Photography Event 2008 By ZEN”. It is also scheduled as part of the French Cultural Festival 2008 or La Fete Bangkok 2008.
Moreover, it is also held as one of the special activities in the “ZEN Earth Care: We Do Our Part for a Greener Earth” event organized by ZEN Department Store to commemorate the World Environment Day celebrated every year on June 5th. The event is aimed to implant and stimulate awareness of environmental issue in Thailand among clients and general public through arts. The message of “Reduce, Reused and Recycle” will be campaigned for better environment.
The press conference on the “Earth From Above: An Aerial Portrait of Our Planet. Towards a Sustainable Development” by world renowned French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, to be held on May 21, 2008 at 1 pm at ZEN Studio, Level 16 of ZEN department store, will be participated by representatives from French Embassy and Raimon Land PLC.
It’s all begun with his great passion in the natural beauty that propelled Yann Arthus-Bertrand to step into the environmental and natural conservation scene.
As a French reporter and a photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand specializes in aerial photography and has initiated the photography exhibition project called The Earth From Above Through books and exhibitions, this image bank of the Earth seen from above, indissociable from the captions, helps the public better understand the issue of sustainable development and the importance of the conservation.Such dedication has earned Yann Arthus-Bertrand worldwide recognition as a photographer-cum-conservationist.
The “Earth From Above” exhibition will feature 120 amazing aerial photos taken from helicopter. Since the exhibition first opened at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris in 2000, it has successfully attracted to this date more than 120 millions viewers in more than 110 cities, 40 countries around the world including Australia, Belgium, France, Italy, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan and the United States.
The “Earth From Above” is not just a stunning display of photographs, but a documented testimony on the state of the Earth in different angles which can be an educational medium that helps people better understand our world and helps conserve it. In 1999, his work was published and “The Earth From Above”, translated in 24 languages, became one of the best selling illustrated books with more than three million copies sold worldwide.
The aerial photographs taken by Yann Arthus-Bertrand are results of his dedication in geological surveying since 1990. Recording through the lens the variety of natural scenes and colors of life as well as the traces of environmental abuse by the hands of human beings, the photos were taken from the helicopter flying at the altitudes range from 300 to 3,000 meters with a total of 4,000 flight hours. In this exhibition, a giant world map (issued by the French National Geographic Institute) will be laid upon the ground to assist viewers to figure out the locations where from the photos have been taken.

Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive officer of Thai AirAsia, said that the airline wants to make sure that donations such as food, clothing, flashlights, and articles for shelter reach Myanmar as fast as possible. Thai AirAsia, which flies out of Bangkok, flies daily to and from neighboring Yangon.
The public may send their donations to any of the airline’s domestic and international stations, and Thai AirAsia will carry these donations to Yangon. For more information, the public may contact the airline by phone at +662 515 9888, by fax at +662 315 9806 and by email at helpmyanmar@airasia.com.
Mr. Tassapon also said that the airline will not cancel its Bangkok-Yangon route. Humanitarian agencies planning to travel to Myanmar can contact the airline as the airline continues to operate regular flights to Yangon. Thai AirAsia is also allowing all guests on the Bangkok-Yangon route who were affected by the cyclone to change their travel dates free of charge.
