ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Gabe Leonard of Venice Beach

I had met Gabe Leonard back at around 1995. From the moment I had seen his work, as he had displayed it out on the Venice Beach walk, with enormous respect and awe.

There were several times I had sat with Gabe to try and learn more about him. One of the things about himself that stuck was how he had worked at Robinson May Department Store when one day he decided to make the bold move to strictly work and sell his art for a living. As I had done time   more...at Bullocks Shoe Dept. in Century City. I know that while it took incredible courage, it couldn't have been a difficult choice.

Now, living in the DC area I often frequent the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art. There is no reason why we will not see Gabe Leonard amongst the world's greatest artists, in my opinion.

Gabe Leonard was born and raised in Wyoming where he spent his childhood trying to skateboard on gravel roads in the summer and digging his parents car out of six foot snow drifts in the winter. He graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1998 with a bachelor of fine arts degree, which he is still paying for and will be to the ends of time. For the last eight years Gabe has lived in Los Angeles, California where he can often be found sleeping, taking long walks on the beach, stuck in traffic or working as a freelance artist.

Some of Gabe's clients include :Gyro World Wide Advertising, Read Magazine, Byron Priess Visual Publications, Paramount Studios, Artisan Entertainment, Rattlesnake and Venom Records, New Jersey Monthly and several Independent theater and film production companies.


Gabe's artwork has appeared on television in "Numbers" on CBS, "The Shield" on Fox FX and "Angel" on CBS, "The Shield" on Fox FX and "Angel" on the WB
