The mental health consequences of combat threaten to overwhelm a new generation of veterans. There are 1.7 million men and women who have served, or are currently serving, in Iraq and Afghanistan. About   more...1 in 5 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are suffering from a mental health injury, ranging from depression to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as a result of their service.

Less than 1% of the U.S. population has served or is serving in the current conflicts and when they return home, their sense of isolation is often magnified. This campaign’s long-term objective is to decrease the depression and PTSD-related outcomes among returning Vets by taking a two-pronged approach – encouraging Veterans to join other Veterans at the first ever online community exclusive to OIF/OEF Vets, and separately, to empower their Friends and Family by helping them learn how to start constructive conversations. The challenges facing returning vets are myriad but with support from other Veterans, family, and friends the issues can be effectively dealt with.  less

Of the 1.7 million veterans who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, nearly one third are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression or Traumatic Brain Injury. Research shows that many veterans   more...avoid seeking help because of the stigma associated with treatment or fear of being diagnosed with a mental illness. Untreated mental health conditions can lead to other debilitating problems in the veterans’ community including high rates of unemployment, suicide, homelessness, substance abuse, divorce, and child abuse.

Those who do seek help often cite their family as the catalyst for support. Yet, many families today do not know how to broach the subject constructively and struggle with ways to approach a friend or family member who has recently returned home.

To empower the family and friends of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to start the conversation and help veterans transition to civilian life, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) joined the Ad Council to launch a series of national public service advertisements (PSAs). The PSAs direct family and friends to www.SupportYourVet.org, where they can interact with one another in an online forum, and access conversation tips, critical mental health resources and information on navigating the VA.

Launched on Veterans Day 2008, an initial series of ads reaches out to veterans directly and encourages them to visit www.CommunityOfVeterans.org, a private social network where Iraq and Afghanistan veterans can access critical resources and share their experiences in a safe forum.  less

I'm posting this video for my father's close buddy, Steve Troth, from a previously recorded talk they had in 2005. Dad has been gone for awhile and Steve is failing very fast now. I want to honor him   more...this way while he is still here to see it. The few remaining WW2 veterans that are still alive today are precious living history. Steve was the captain of one of the ships that sailed with General Douglas MacArthur to the Phillipines. I wanted to record a new video of him telling about this, for Veteran's Day, but he was not well enough. He says he will try to do this in the next few weeks. In the meantime, we can all wish him well on this day of remembering. Please take a few moments to leave a comment for Steve.  less
