Would the US allow its citizens to be attacked and killed by a foreign power and then cover up the facts?

It would - and it has.

On June 8th, 1967, the Israeli   more...military attacked and attempted to sink the USS Liberty as she sailed under a US flag in international waters. Thirty-four US servicemen were killed and 171 injured by a well-coordinated, multi-wave assault which included the use of napalm.

The Israeli military called the attack a "tragic mistake" and then-President Lyndon Johnson agreed it was nothing more. Sailors who were aboard the ship were warned not to disclose the facts of what happened that day under penalty of court martial - or worse.

aaron brown told us the pentagon was on fire at 9:40am, 2 min, 53 seconds after the 911 commission report says the attack actually occurred and about 2 min before CBS and NBC showed us live shots of a   more...fireball, a silent fireball, outside the pentagon's west wall near the chopper pad.
CNN reported later that very day that the Pentagon attack occurred at 9:43. Certainly understandable given the events of the day. But, the next day and more than a year later, CNN was still reporting the incorrect time. Anyone who has a CNN reference with a different time, I hope you will share it in comments.
daryl donley's story has him experiencing the attack as he was stopped in traffic on 27 right outside the west wall of the pentagon. At 9:43. According to his story, it took him several minutes to get his picture - a picture gracing the library of congress because of its significance.
As CBS and NBC unfocused their "live" cameras on the west wall of the pentagon at 9:43am, we were treated to a serious fireball (starting under the channel 9 figleaf and behind the NBC peacock). We never see another although multiple explosions are reported on TV.
Did daryl donley arrive at 9:37am, fumble with his camera then capture the CBS/NBC fireball, or was his memory correct and the fire started before the fireball created by the attack?
Any other reasons for CNN to have used the 9:43 time should be exposed in comments.
