1830, the Cherokee Nation was forced to give up its lands east of the Mississippi River and migrate to Indian Territory (now present day Oklahoma.)
During the forced march, over 4,000 of the 15,000 Indians   more...died of hunger, disease, cold, and exhaustion. In the Cherokee language, the event is called Nunna daul Tsuny -- "the trail where they cried."
The Indian Removal Policy was spawned by the rapidly expanding population of new settlers .....

"I saw the helpless Cherokees arrested and dragged from their homes, and driven at the bayonet point into the stockades. And in the chill of a drizzling rain on an October morning I saw them loaded like cattle or sheep into six hundred and forty-five wagons and started toward the west....On the morning of November the 17th we encountered a terrific sleet and snow storm with freezing temperatures and from that day until we reached the end of the fateful journey on March the 26th 1839, the sufferings of the Cherokees were awful. The trail of the exiles was a trail of death. They had to sleep in the wagons and on the ground without fire. And I have known as many as twenty-two of them to die in one night of pneumonia due to ill treatment, cold and exposure..."

This is my first attempt! ;-) Mom was visiting here in Arizona and wanted to go to a small town called Tortilla Flat (population 7). It sits on the Apache Trail between the Roosevelt Dam and Apache   more...Junction. It was a wonderful trip - switchbacks and awesome lake views the whole way. At the end, we crossed a one lane bridge to get to Tortilla Flat - that was kinda weird! We ate a hamburger at the only place in town to get food and turned around and headed back to Phoenix. It was nice spending time with my mom...  less

Recently my cousin and I had a few days free so we decided to take a road trip to visit family in KY. One of our goals was to drive only designated National Scenic Byways as much as we possibly could   more...so we drove the Midland Trail, Route 60, beginning at White Sulpher Springs, WV and ending at Louisville, Ky. This video contains only a few of the many scenic stops we made along the way. If you'd like to find the scenic byways in your area search www.byways.org and take time to enjoy the ride!
