He was abounded   more...by his owner a couple of weeks ago and was found by animal protectors who cared for him until he was placed in a temporary home. Simba's future is for now uncertain.  less

We currently have 12 cougars residing at Big Cat Rescue, they are the largest cat in North America reaching up to 250lbs. Hear our cougars purr and squeak as we take a walk around the sanctuary.

Jobs working with animals involve doing a variety of different things especially at Big Cat Rescue! We clean, feed, give tours, make enrichment, do admin work and of course do some landscaping on the   more...property! We have over 140 big cats, which is alot of enclosures to maintain year round, watch as Big Cat Rescue staff and volunteers remove trees from two bobcat enclosures, one which fell over night and one which gets pulled down to prevent problems in the future. All the enclosures at Big Cat Rescue are made of two sections so we could easily separate the cats into one section whilst we worked in the other!

So take a look at the guys and girls in action along with the trusty "Brick & Rope"!

We recently did a free tour for a group of veterans from our local V.A. hospital. Since a number of our own members are former military it is always a meaningful   more...experience. We decided to make a different form of enrichment to give to Cameron and Zabu our male lion and white tiger that live in the same enclosure!

The cardboard giraffe/gazelle was filled with small chunks of red meat to entice the big cats into action! Cameron was first on scene and didn't seem interested so Zabu had the enrichment all to herself.

The tour group, staff and volunteers enjoyed watching her antics and we're sure Zabu enjoyed the snack and toy!

Big Cat Rescue is located in Tampa Florida, during the summer months it gets extremely hot, so to help our cats beat the heat we make them popsicles!

For the smaller cats we make bloodcicles, chickcicles   more...and sardini martinis, but for our larger residents we make super size popsicles for them to enjoy!

Watch one of our senior volunteers go through the process of making one of these giant popsicles and then hand it out to a grateful tiger!  less

If you ever wondered what it's like to see a tiger or leopard eating up close the Big Cat Rescue Feeding Tour is for you! We offer the feeding tour every friday and saturday afternoon and you get to follow   more...one of our senior keepers around the sanctuary and see a wide variety of big cats chomping down on their dinner!

Enrichment is a very important part of caring for captive animals, at Big Cat Rescue we maintain a program making sure that all our cats receive enrichment on a regular basis. A special treat for the   more...cats at this time of year is left over christmas trees that are donated by local stores. Watch as our lions, tigers and leopards enjoy playing with their trees!

This is a quick introduction to one of our newest rescues - Freckles the LIGER! Freckles was rescued along with Alex and Cookie her tiger companions from a failed sanctuary formerly known as Cougar Haven   more...in Mississippi. All 3 cats have been in quarantine for the past few months to allow them to get used to their new home.

Now they are comfortable and doing well they are on the tour path at Big Cat Rescue, watch as Director of Operations Scott Lope feeds Freckles allowing you to get a good look at her different features.  less
