AMERICA. Joe looks back in history for insight as to whether Americans really
are ready to embrace that slogan of change everyone's chanting.

Super Tuesday is just days away, on February 5th, and even by the often wild
standards of U.S. primaries, this is shaping up to be a dramatic and exciting
event. It's when 22 U.S. states make their choice for a Presidential candidate.

The race for the Democratic Party is now down to Barack Obama and Hillary
Clinton. Among Republicans it's between John McCain and Mitt Romney.

The CBC's veteran correspondent Joe Schlesinger has covered many Super Tuesdays
in his day when he was based in Washington from the Carter years through Ronald
Reagan's Presidency to the Presidency of George Bush senior.

Joe sees 2008 as something of a watershed year in U.S. politics and thinks that
insight can be gained by looking back at another tumultuous era in American
history for clues as to what may be taking shape.

In the second half of the show we look at the future of U.S. foreign policy
under a new president and explore the idea of whether the U.S. is a SHRINKING
SUPERPOWER.

Brian has an in-depth discussion with Parag Khanna. He is the author of a
controversial New York Times Magazine article, on the complex foreign policy
challenges the next President of the United States will inherit.

Khanna believes the global playing field has dramatically changed and that
America may not be able to exert the type of influence it did in the past -
despite the continuing importance of its economy and military power. His
thought-provoking essay is entitled: "Waving Goodbye to Hegemony."  less

Nearly 200 whales and several dolphins are stranded on a beach in the southern Australian island state of Tasmania, the latest in a string of beachings in recent months.

Rescuers were headed Monday to   more...Naracoopa Beach on Tasmania's King Island to try to save some of the 194 pilot whales and half a dozen bottlenose dolphins that began beaching themselves on Sunday evening.  less

I saw a small child playing on the beach, and he heard the command of the G-d of Israel.

The Lord spoke, and said, "Gather my tribes together, and line them up one by one on the sea shore".

The   more...child took, what looked like toy soldiers, and lined them up as the Lord commanded him.

"Line up my Sabbath Keepers!" I looked, and I saw what was just over a line of soldiers on the front line, facing the sea.

"Line up the Saturday Sabbath Keepers!" I looked, and about one and a half lines of toy soldiers lined up behind the others. There was a silence, and row upon row of soldiers lined up behind those lines, which the child has set in the sand of the sea shore.

Then we waited, and as the tide came in, it brought in firstly the Sabbath Keepers with it, and then the Saturday Sabbath Keepers, and some of the others. The child was then commanded to show them to his parents, who were further up the beach. He took one and held it up, and I saw that it was an American soldier he had in his hand.

I expected the dream to go on, but it didn't- it just ended.
