I know how to do it on a PC with StereoMovie Maker freeware and/or VirtualDub freeware, but I can more...also show how to do it with Adobe After Effects (PC or Mac). less Tags: stereoscopic 3d howto Category: Arts & Animation Views: 281 Comments: 8 Added: Jan 31, 07 By: RogerMaddy | | | | | Stereoscopic 3D Vloggers Where Are You? 01:22Calling all stereoscopic 3D vloggers. It’s time to communicate. My calendar says it’s 2007… To see this video in 3D, you need to wear red/cyan 3D anaglyph glasses with the red lens over the left eye. The sliding camera is on a much larger more...scale because it is basically me on a zip line. Although this is not true 3D, by shifting the frames and stereo base slightly I did get some more depth, which really helps contrast the rider even more. Hopefully I'll get more time to shoot similar footage in true 3D to show more of the landscape. less Tags: none Category: Sports Views: 112 Comments: 0 Added: Dec 15, 07 By: nattieb | | | | | Animated Stereoscopic 3D Scenes with Google SketchUp freeware version) 00:05This video is in 3D. To see it in 3D, wear red/cyan anaglyph glasses with the red lens over the left eye. This is a real short, low rez, low frame rate example (you can render high rez images), but I figured more...out how to (somewhat) easily make animated stereoscopic 3D scenes with Google SketchUp software (I’m using the freeware version).
1. Install Google SketchUp, then download a model.
2. Open the model in SketchUp and create an animation. Save the animation project file, then save an exact, duplicate copy of that same project file, with a different file name.
3. Open both “saved” animations in separate SketchUp windows, resized on your monitor, placed side-by-side, either as a parallel pair or crossed pair (you’ll have to figure out how to view them stereoscopically, e.g. with a stereoscope or free-viewed.)
4. Open the first frame of each scene that you created in the animation (one at a time) and shift the camera in one window by panning _exactly_ left or right (horizontally) until the amount of depth is desired for that frame. When finished, "Update Scene". Since there are no guidelines in the SketchUp GUI, I open a separate program that can be used as an overlay (placed in “always on top” mode), squeeze the program to the minimum height possible, and use the top or bottom edges of that program as “guides”, e.g. IrfanView freeware works perfectly for this purpose.
When you are finished, if your panning was perfectly parallel (horizontal), you should end up a separate left and right perspective animation with interpolated frames with an animated stereo base. Since the cameras were “pointed parallel”, you will need to shift the parallax (”set the stereo window”) in post with something like StereoMovie Maker. I fudged with my video and used Adobe After Effects to create an animated, floating stereo window, but that’s just my personal preference (for reducing ghosting and window edge violations). I also try to keep the amount of depth “below optimum” to reduce anaglyph ghosting. Since my anaglyph internet videos are typically viewed with a small viewing FOV, the depth is exaggerated a bit, which helps the stereoscopic effect, in that case. less Tags: google sketchup stereoscopic 3d cgi Category: Arts & Animation Views: 1,113 Comments: 0 Added: Jul 13, 07 By: RogerMaddy | | | | | re Be A Tyrant Competition) 01:50This is my video response to "Be A Tyrant (Competition)".

I just made this video, tonight, showing my stereoscopic 3D video rig. I know I've made a video or two about this before, but here's another one, if anyone is interested.
I think I'll make a video, next, about "PC Freeware I Can't Live Without For 3D Capture/Editing", but after that I'd like to make a video or two about a quad-line kite idea and a music idea... To see that last part in 3D, wear red/cyan anaglyph glasses with the red lens over the more...left eye during that segment.
Here’s how I try to get an “optimum” amount of stereoscopic 3D depth in every image. Watch the animation a few times, and hopefully you will understand the simple concept. Compose the shot by visualizing the final frame of the image, and the far left and right edges of that frame. Locate the nearest and farthest visible points in that stereoscopic frame. This includes _any_ point that is visible, anywhere, i.e. on the ground close to the camera, in the sky, far, far away, etc. Anything that is visible has to be included… _anything_. Imagine the frame (that same final frame of the image) being located at the same exact depth as the _nearest_ point. That frame is divided into 30 equal, horizontal segments. The left and right camera viewpoints are horizontally displaced (shifted) exactly one of those equal segments (1/30th of the frame width) apart… end of story. It can’t get much simpler than that… but… This is actually “reverse engineering”, but don’t worry… it is easier to do than it sounds. You can set this up any way you want… by changing the stereo base (the distance between the left and right lenses) of the stereoscopic camera… or by moving closer or farther from the near point… or by changing the focal length and the field of view… or by excluding the most distance object, etc… however you get the job done will work… Visualizing what is going on before you shoot the scene is the tricky part, but keep practicing, and you will eventually be able to do this very quickly. If you can come up with a visual aide or two, that helps, e.g. I have a piece of paper with a vertical black bar down the center that shows me what “1/30th of the frame width” looks like… BTW, that final frame (the “stereo window”) can be shifted, later, forward or back in the depth of the scene, but that initial frame is what defines the total amount of depth (”stereoscopic deviation”), i.e. the distance from the nearest visible point to the farthest visible point in the entire scene.

The first thing to more...do is minimize the depth. It only takes a little bit to get the job done. An "optimum" amount is actually a lot less than most people probably realize, anyway, and "a little too much" will absolutely kill your videos when you try to compress them. The other most important thing to do is properly set your screen parallax to a point that works the best. If done "incorrectly", the compression can make the video unwatchable. Keep in mind that you have to compress your video to begin with for video sites like LiveVideo, so that the file size is small enough for you to be able to upload, and then the video site will again compress that video to Flash. This double-whammie of compression will guarantee that a "poorly designed" anaglyph will be totally destroyed in the process. Only the most carefully designed anaglyphs will survive.

That was really my main question (or should have been)... not whether or not a videoblogger would make a video comment or response, but why *most* people won't make talking head videos, at all. What are the "real" reasons for this? I'm convinced the reasons are based more in "fear", not technological issues, e.g. "it is difficult to do, because of problems with the camera or computer, etc." What are people afraid of?
