The United States wants to keep the armaments away from al-Qaeda-linked Islamic insurgents who have been fighting the U.N.-backed Somali transitional government since late 2006. More than 9,000 people have been killed in the Iraq-style insurgency, most of them civilians. Piracy has become a lucrative criminal racket in impoverished Somalia, bringing in millions of dollars in ransom. The pirates aboard the blue-and-white Ukrainian-operated freighter are demanding $20 million to release the ship, its 21 crew members, and its cargo of T-72 tanks, rifles and ammunition. One crewmember has already died, possibly of a heart attack. The ship, anchored off Somalia's coast near the central town of Hobyo, was destined for Sudan when armed pirates overtook it and climbed up the side of the ship. "We maintain a vigilant watch over the ship and we will remain on station while negotiations between the pirates and the shipping company are going on," Lt. Nathan Christensen, a deputy spokesman for the U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, told the AP. U.S. Navy destroyers and cruisers have been deployed within 10 miles of the hijacked vessel.  less

The Mogadishu Mile was a long mile run by U.S. Rangers and Delta Force from the helicopter crash site to the Pakistani Stadium during the Battle of Mogadishu on October 4, 1993 part of Task Force Ranger   more...in an attempt to overthrow Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Originally they were supposed to take cover by running along side the convoy of Humvees and armoured personnel carriers, however when the convoy outpaced them they were forced to run without support and with very little ammunition while under heavy fire coming from all directions.  less
