What was Rareware like before 1994? Did any of you know that Rareware made games for the NES? Well, it's true. Rareware made quite a few games before the well-known Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie,   more...and this is one of them! And even before there were pre-rendered graphics where everything was modeled in 3-D, this game had impressive graphics for the NES -- it had nice 3-D affects. Just look at the background. It has parallax scrolling! That's pretty rare for the NES, if you ask me. The game has a 3-D look to it overall, which looks great.

But why am I playing this game? Well, ever since the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IeiJ69gQKM">AVGN reviewed it on YouTube</a>, I wanted to try the game for myself. I already knew that this game was made by Rare way before AVGN's video, so it must be good! Well, even though the AVGN made it sound like a bad game, it really isn't that bad. It sure is hard, though.

This game is so hard that I can never make it past the third level. Because of this, <b>I decided to try something different for a change -- rather than upload a speedrun, this time I'm going to show myself messing up at the game, while seeing how far I can get in this level.</b> What you're seeing here is the farthest I ever got in this level. Really. I'm not kidding.

The first part isn't hard at all -- you just beat up a bunch of enemies by punching them. The hard part is when you ride a vehicle that goes very fast. It's similar to the mine cart stages in DKC, but harder -- all these walls come by at an increasingly fast speed, and you have to either jump on them, weave around them, or stay under them. There are also ramps that you have to take, which isn't that hard, thankfully. There are also some enemies that you have to dodge, and I only got past these once, which you'll see in this video (unfortunately, I mess up soon after that, because I didn't know you had to jump). Yes, you're seeing the only time I have ever gotten past these enemies.

I mess up a lot and lose lives. Even with an extra life that I get at 100,000 points, I lose them all and get a Game Over. The Game Over screen is rather bland for a Rareware game -- I was expecting to see Rash (the character I was controlling) all beat up or something.

I think the music in this game was composed by none other than... David Wise! I think a lot of you know who he is...

One last thing -- This is probably the only Battletoads video I'll upload, and I probably won't upload this on YouTube.  less

A speedrun of Koco Channel. As usual, I get the bonus and DK coins. I skip Squitter because it's faster to go without him. You're SUPPOSED to get that first bonus with Squitter, but I just float over   more...with Dixie instead.
OK, now for the REAL reason why I uploaded this video: I wanted to show off my color palette hack of this game. About a year ago, I figured out to hack color palettes in GBC games and this was one of the first games (not the very first one, though...) that I attempted to modify color palettes. My biggest change is that I made the river levels have this autumn look (like Bobbing Barrel Brawl in DKC3), and I REALLY liked how it turned out. You'll notice that some of the other changes I made were some of the sprites, and Dixie's and Kiddy's clothes (especially Kiddy's) in the bonus screens (based off the COLOR "cheat" in DKC3). So, this is the first video where I've shown a hack of a DK game.

Just a couple of glitches that I found. The first glitch is one where you can jump on a Lurchin if it hits the top of the water. The timing of this must be EXACT, and it's really difficult to do. It's   more...funny to watch, though... (If anybody cares, I just found this glitch a couple of days ago by accident!)
The second one is the steel keg glitch. Unlike in DKC3, steel kegs don't float on water (they must have somehow gotten more dense). So if it hits an enemy while it sinks into water, it defeats it! (I actually knew about this one when I first had the game, because this one is easy to do by accident.)

A speedrun of Arctic Abyss. This level seems a lot harder than it is on the Game Boy, because Puftups explode, and Enguarde doesn't seem to be able to defeat enemies manually (you have to keep pressing   more...Y, similar to in DKL3). But I liked how this turned out.  less

A speedrun of Croctopus Chase. I did this one as fast as I could, without slowing down at all or getting hit, so this one is difficult to beat.

A weird glitch in Donkey Kong Country 3 where you can fall just by switching Kongs. When you run to the top of the slope by the waterfall, press Select and you will probably fall off and lose a life.

A speedrun of Ghostly Grove. This turned out better than I thought. I get both bonuses and the DK coin. I move pretty fast except in a couple or so areas.

This is one of the few levels that is EASIER than   more...its DKL2 counterpart -- the ropes are easier to jump to in this game because they aren't as erratic as they are in DKL2. I can do this level really easily with Diddy in this game, whereas in DKL2 it's very, very difficult, which is a major annoyance.

Oh, and this music is incredibly awesome.  less

A speedrun of Jungle Jinx. I get the DK coin as well. This run is OK but it didn't turn out as well as it could have turned out... oh well.

A speed run of Lockjaw's Locker. I haven't played this game much in a while so I decided to do a simple level. I get the bonus coins and the DK coin...

A speedrun of Torchlight Trouble. The only level in the game with Squawks in it! I get both the bonuses. The level was shorter than I remember it to be...

Here's a glitch that's been bugging me for a while now. In the GBC version of DKL3, the default demo (the Jetty Jitters one, the one that appears if you don't press any buttons on the title screen) doesn't   more...play properly. After Kiddy hits the Klasp, Dixie's movements get screwed up and she just randomly moves around. She then gets hit by a Klasp as well. The GB version doesn't do this -- even after hitting the Klasp, Dixie still moves like normal. I don't know why the GBC version is any different, seeing that it has the exact same game engine and physics. Maybe Rare screwed up when porting it?

It's worth noting that none of the other three demos (Rickety Rapids, Deep Reef Grief, Whiplash Dash) are glitchy. They play just like the GB version. So why did THIS one screw up?

Also, I heard that there's a similar glitch at the end of the Xbox 360 port of Banjo-Kazooie...

A speedrun of Minky Mischief in DKL3. This one is OK... mainly because the level is hard to do fast. I do the Squawks part pretty well because I don't get hit and I don't slow down much. I only get hit   more...once, and that was on purpose, because it's easier to go through the Bristles than wait for it to turn around.
I also think the tree music is annoying in this game, and that the tree levels are a little too bright... like the ones in GBA DKC3...  less

SHORTCUTS GALORE! This is a speedrun of Bramble Blast. But this isn't your ordinary speedrun. In this video, you'll see me take tons of unexpected shortcuts! Many of these save tons of time. A speedrun of Criss Kross Cliffs. This level is hard but this run turned out a LOT better than I thought it was going to. I move pretty fast and take advantage of this level's quirks (namely making Buzzes   more...disappear from the screen which can sometimes allow steel barrels to continue firing up). Oh, and I didn't mess up when going right after the second bonus barrel -- I had to do that or else the barrels wouldn't fire. Weird level... this doesn't happen on the GBA version, though...

A speedrun of Creepy Caverns. This feels a LOT like Stalagmite frights in Donkey Kong Land III - lots of Krumples, some Knocka/Krushas, and GHOST BARRELS! This was a pain in the neck because the Ghost   more...Barrels can be unpredictable sometimes. This is the best I've done out of many tries. I get the bonuses and the DK coin. An old speedrun of Stalagmite Frights. This is one of the hardest because one of the ghost barrels doesn't always point in the direction you want it to go, which wastes some time. This took me a lot of   more...restarts, so this was as good as it got...  less

A somewhat old speedrun of Rickety Rapids. I do this level pretty efficiently, and make few mistakes. The biggest mistake is getting hit at the very end, but overall I get a good time, and more than 20   more...seconds under the required time.  less
