From the dock at the town of Gamboa, boats carry tourists on excursions to the Smithsonian Research Station on the Island of Barro Colarado, or to   more...fish for peacock bass which thrive in the lake's warm waters.  less

This diverse rainforest region is essential to supporting the Panama Canal. Lake Gatun is where boats passing from one ocean to the other have to   more...pass through and the river chagres is where the canal's freshwater supply comes from. Without this the center would not have enough water, due to the lock system in place.  less

Some of the most fascinating sights that I had encountered during my motorboat tour of Lake Gatun was "monkey village". I had the opportunity   more...of seeing these magnificent creatures (capuhin monkeys) also known as "white-faced monkeys" in their natural setting. These friendly little primates welcome tourist, because they know this means food. It was amazng seeing them climb out onto branches or onto the boat itself in search for this food and greedily but affectionally grab food from our hands. Each time a ship transits the canal, 53 million U.S. Gallons   more...of water is passsed from the lake into the sea; and with over 14,000 vessel transits per year, this represents a very large demand for water. However, since rainfall is seasonal in Panama, the lake acts as a water store, allowing the canal to continue its operation through the dry season.  less

We have seen gorgeous scenery of forests that surround the lake and trees of different shades of greens, and the wildlife is spectacular.
