Following suit of other large global air carriers, Qantas of Australia is cutting 1,500 jobs and grounding 22 planes in a reaction to sky high fuel costs.

Australia’s largest airline, is cutting 4% of   more...its work force, where employees will be pushed toward early retirement, extended leaves, and movement to part time positions. 20% of the labor cutbacks will be at the management level. The company will also close call centers in London and Arizona.

Qantas had planned to increase its capacity 8% for 2009 and add 1,200 jobs in the process.

But as a weak global economy dictates the activity of travelers, airlines now have to avoid the threat of bankruptcy.
