La plage de l'Uhabia, La playa de Uhabia, The beach of Uhabia

In an effort to avoid Paris becoming deserted every summer, the city now builds an artificial beach along the Seine - quite an extraordinary sight. When we lived there in 2003, it was the year of "la   more...canicule" - the hottest summer ever in France.

Lyrics:

In the summer all the streets here are deserted.
You can't find the Parisians or their pets.
It's easier to avoid the poodle droppings
As you walk that extra block for your baguettes.

The outbound roads are chock-a-block with traffic
As the city-dwellers bid the town goodbye
And they head towards the coast for their vacations,
Where the hotel prices reach towards the sky.

But in the city,
It's very pretty.
They've made a beach along the river Seine,
With children playing in the sand
And lovers walking hand-in-hand.
Oh, let's go down to Paris Plage again.

You can make an Eiffel Tower out of sand.
You can picnic and there's lots of games to play.
There are ice-cream stalls that only charge you double,
And toilets where you never have to pay.

It's such a pity
To leave the city.
You can lie in deck-chairs soaking up the sun.
Get a tan while you have the chance
And in the evening you can dance
To African drumbeats when the day is done.

In the city streets you'll only see the tourists
Queuing for the Louvre and Notre Dame.
The restaurateurs have all gone on vacation
But you can't close down that old Parisian charm.

Yes, in the city
It's very pretty.

The mayor of Paris had a dream
And brought about this bold new scheme,
So let's go down to Paris Plage again.

Down to the Seine
And join the bodies lying in the sun.
No matter if you're fat or slim,
Even though you can't go for a swim,
At Paris Plage you'll have a lot of fun.

With the hospitals and nursing homes short-handed
It's the hottest summer France has ever known.
Eleven thousand old folks never made it,
When their families went and left them all alone.
