I had been about to turn the car around on the highway to go back to film an Osprey nest, and spotted this turtle in the middle of the oncoming lane. A car just missed him (her?). I stopped and picked   more...him up. I just took a very short video and a couple of photos before finding a much more turtle-friendly spot for him in a nearby marsh.  less

This is Chico, and he is my Painted Turtle. He is probably about 5 months old, I think. He is much, much bigger than he was when I first got him, and hes a lot of fun. I took the gravel and sand out   more...of his tank, because they just kept the water dirty. About a week after I put the gravel in his tank he started picking pieces up and carrying them around the tank, so I removed it. Probably wouldn't be good for him to eat a piece of gravel. :P  less

This is Chico. I found out that he is actually a Painted Turtle, and not a Red-Bellied Turtle. This is after I changed from sand to gravel in the bottom of his tank. Its a few months old.

Atascadero Lake, California, 2-09-08. Mother Nature takes care of this species of turtle which is protected here in the state. Sometimes turtles get away from their protection as this one did before   more...getting old enough to know better. He was hit by a car on his back side, injuring his legs and smashing his tail. He would not have been able to navigate well for a time so I was glad that a retarded girl found him and took him home to care for him. She didn't allow him to come out of water was his only loss. She had to move and had seen me walking our sliders at the park next door and offered him to me. I was quite surprised that he was a wild turlte but of course took him in and saw his half smashed tail. She was able to tell me where she found him and about his condition so I was able to complete his nursing and getting rid of ick and within one year he had experienced the ground, an extreme heat wave and then winter hybernation prior to this springs release. As he came out of hybernation he is strong as can be and his tail shows only a tip bend which will shed this year. Seeing his wonderful condition Saturday when he came out of condition Friday, we decided it was time and the weather was right for a quick release.  less

He was the size of a quarter when I got him within six months he weighed over a pound. I calculated his growth rate and determined I should be able to grow him to something like   more...233 tons in just a few years.>;o) Then I can ride him around, take him hunting and stuff. I'd put a little shack on his back.
He escaped in Dec 06. He'll be easy to find once he hits a few dozen tons.  less
