A beautiful song from the 1977 album American Stars and Bars. Imagine yourself as a salmon swimming upstream to spawn, what a beautiful metaphor! Young recorded this into a tape recorder in his living   more...room in front of a crackling fire so I tried and failed to replicate that look. The lighting was way too low and the fire on my computer screen is behind me. The recording came out good though so I went ahead with the video and lightened it as much as I could.  less

It's the summer of 1976 and I'm a 16 year old working as a construction laborer and it's one hell of a hot day. Suddenly I hear the first notes of this song and drop everything and head for the radio   more...and crank it up. Instantly recognizable as a Neil Young song, I was thrilled. Then I found out it was the Stills Young Band!! I kept checking and bought that album when my record store got the first ones in! Great song and great album!

I had to overdub harmony on "caroline - oh" because solo it didn't come off well.

This song was written by Young while on tour in his hotel room after he saw a news broadcast of Richard Nixon leaving the hospital and looking very distraught because of his wife Pat Nixon's stroke.
