What to do with Kant

Immanuel Kant was a Prussian philosopher and metaphysician. In the way that most of the early Greek thought was based on Socrates, most of the later German philosophy is based on Kant. This essay, written   more...in 1795, puts forth a plan for a lasting peace between nations and peoples. Kant puts forth necessary means to any peace, and argues that nations can be brought into federation with one another without loss of sovereignty.

It’s an interesting fact to note that all 6 requirements for peace Kant pointed to in his essay are being entirely neglected today.


The main points of his essay:

1) “No conclusion of peace shall be held to be valid as such, when it has been made with the secret reservation of the material for a future war”

2) “No state having an existence by itself- whetever it be small or large-shall be acquirable by another state through inheritance, exchange, purchase or donation.”

3) “Standing armies shall be entirely abolished in the course of time”

4) “No national debts shall be contracted in connection with the external affairs of the state.”

5) “No state shall intermeddle by force with the constitution or government of another state.”

6) “No state at war with another shall adopt such modes of hostility as would necessarily render mutual confidence impossible in a future peace”
