Langkawi, a cluster of 99 islands separated from mainland Malaysia by the Straits of Malacca, is a district of the state of Kedah in Northern Malaysia and lies approximately 51km west of Kedah. The total   more...land mass of the islands is 47,848 hectares, while the main island of Langkawi itself has a total of 32,000 hectares. The main island spans about 25km from north to south and slightly more for east and west. The coastal areas consist of flat, alluvial plains punctuated with limestone ridges. Two thirds of the island is dominated by forest - covered mountains, hills and natural vegetation.The name "Langkawi" is believed to be related to the kingdom of Langkasuka, centred in modern-day Kedah. The historical record is sparse, but a Chinese Liang Dynasty record (c. 500 AD) refers to the kingdom of "Langgasu" as being founded in the 1st century AD. 'Langkawi' mean's Eagle Island, it may be noted, and indeed there is a great abundance of eagles in the area. In Kuah, there is an eagle monument in Eagle Square which commemorates the origin of Langkawi's name.

Langkawi is also the site of the Mahsuri legend. The legend speaks of a young woman who was accused of adultery and was executed by the public despite her pleading innocence. Mahsuri, before her death, made a curse on the island for seven generations of bad luck. Langkawi eventually came under the influence of the Sultanate of Kedah, but Kedah was conquered in 1821 by Siam and Langkawi along with it. The Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 transferred power to the British, who held the state until independence, except for a brief period of Thai rule under the Japanese occupation of Malaya during World War II. Thai influences remain visible in the culture and food of Langkawi, while Thai language is still understood by many on the island.

Langkawi was the site of the Langkawi Declaration, issued by the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Nations and making environmental sustainability one of the priorities of the Commonwealth.  less

The success of Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2007 has spurred the Malaysian goverment to extend the campaign with the theme "Celebrating 50 years of Nationhood-One Golden Celebration"

The performance of Visit Malaysia Year 2007 has been very encouraging.The campaign drew over 20.8 million tourists to Malaysia,which exceeded the 20.1 million target set by the goverment.
Correspondingly,the RM46.7 billion in foreign exchange earnings that
tourists brought in has also surpassed the RM44.s billion target.
The goverment is optimistic that this growth trend will continue into this
year especially with the extension of Visit Malaysia Year.The projected tourist arrivals for 2008 are 22.5 million while tourism revenue is expected to reach RM50.3 billion.
While the VMY 2007 campaign was more events-driven,featuring more than 240 international-level events and activities,its extension will be more destinations-focused where intensive promotions will be carried out on selected destinations.
Nevertheless,the country continues to be filled with various exciting and colourful events such as the Malaysia International Space Adventure,Le Tour de Langkawi,The Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix,Colours of Malaysia,the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival,Flora Fest ,Monsoon Cup,as well as other cultural festivities.
In addition,the state goverments,of Terengganu,Kelantan and Kedah are also aggressively promoting their respective states as leading tourist destinations through their own "Visit State Year 208" campaigns.  less
