This species is in a very sharp decline and is being systematically killed or removed from its natural habitat. Its future looks bleak unless sanctuaries can be created to safeguard   more...this extraordinary creature of immense solitude and peace.. .the "Gray Ghost" cat. In words of biologist George B. Schaller, "Suddenly I saw the snow leopard. Wisps of cloud moved between us, and she became a ghost creature, appearing and disappearing as if in a dream."
Snow leopards do not roar, they are considered nocturnal, but they are active in the early morning and late afternoon. The longest a Snow leopard has live in captivity is 15 years. The reason they are endangered is poaching for the fur, loss of habitat caused by deforestation and dam projects, and loss of food sources. How people are trying to help them is habitat protection, captive breeding, stiff penalties for poachers and international buyers or illegal furs, and public education.  less

Big Cat Rescue is located in Tampa Florida, during the summer months it gets extremely hot, so to help our cats beat the heat we make them popsicles!

For the smaller cats we make bloodcicles, chickcicles   more...and sardini martinis, but for our larger residents we make super size popsicles for them to enjoy!

Watch one of our senior volunteers go through the process of making one of these giant popsicles and then hand it out to a grateful tiger!  less

Each year we are lucky enough to receive left over pumpkins from stores after halloween, pumpkins are a great source of enrichment for our cats, as well as a great source of entertainment for the staff   more...and volunteers at Big Cat Rescue! Imagine...It's the night of a full moon and you are groping through the underbrush in the wilds of a Florida forest when you hear the roar of lions and tigers so close you can almost feel their hot breath!   more...Armed with only a flashlight you continue on at the urging of your guide and notice that you are the main attraction to all the wild animals living at Big Cat Rescue. You see hundreds of glowing eyes, all focused on you and as you pass the enclosures you hear the rushing of the great cats as they make a pounce for you in the dark. You'll hear the roaring of tigers, the screaming of cougars and the caterwauling of bobcats, lynx and more as you try to get back to the safety of your car. It's an adrenaline rush to turn the tables and become the hunted rather than the hunter. It's an experience you will remember and talk about for years to come.

Previously this tour was only offered to expedition guests, but due to popular demand, we decided to offer this exciting tour on the last Friday of each month and invite all brave souls to enjoy this awesome activity. THIS TOUR IS ONLY AVAILABLE ON THE LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH!!!

We are always thinking of new ways to keep our cats entertained at the sanctuary, this year we decided to give them easter eggs to see how they'd react!

They had a mixed reaction but overall the cats enjoyed   more...their eggs and we think it was an egg-cellent idea!

Enrichment is very important for captive animals, we make lots of different items for our cats to stimulate natural behaviors and give them something to do.

Nothing goes to waste at Big Cat Rescue especially when it can be used as enrichment for two of our tigers, Shere Khan and China Doll!
Treats like this encourage natural behaviors and provide mental stimulation   more...for our cats. This video puts a face on the cat's food and I hope it causes people to stop and think about what they eat. The cats have no other choice, but we do and seeing the cow's faces in this video really brings home the fact that the burger on your plate had a face too.

Male lions will often fight other males that enter their pride, this one was being chased but turned to take on his attacker, he lost, but kept his life, possibly he can try to take it back.

Big Cat Rescue is a nonprofit 501(c)3 charity dedicated to the care of exotic cats. We provide a permanent home for unwanted wildcats and we educate the public in order to eliminate the causes of abandonment   more...and abuse. The images of exploitation and horrid conditions in the video above were filmed in places where we had been asked to rescue big cats; but we cannot save them all.
