40 new jobs will be created with the opening of Safco Products Company’s new East Coast distribution facility.

The office products supplier based in New Hope, Minnesota will invest $17 million into the   more...construction of the new building.

Safco, a division of Liberty Diversified Industries, started offering corrugated storage products for office use more than 40 years ago.

Governor, Tim Kaine, cited the county’s closeness to the Port of Virginia as an important factor in the decision… because it will improve delivery times in the region.
Work is currently underway at the Shirley T. Holland Intermodal Park.

Christie Miller, with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership told WVEC.com, that they hope to be in the building and operating by December 1.  less

All across the country, jobs are being lost and costs are being cut. With increases in cost, slow consumer demand, and a weak Dollar, the economy’s troubles are preventing growth.

The U.S. Unemployment   more...rate is at 5.5% for June, and major breakdowns in banking, airline, and automotive industries, have caused a national panic.

Still, some states are weathering the storm and finding good news among the wreckage.

Massachusetts has been able to add jobs in 8 out of the last 9 months. It has fared better then most of the country, but while the state added 2,900 positions in June, its unemployment rate rose to 5.2% for the month.

Despite the craze of high fuel prices, U.S. oil production has risen. In the state of Alaska, unemployment was down to 6.8% from 6.9% in May. Many workers in Alaska tend to stay there, while others look for work up North.

A national slowdown will affect all job markets eventually. A recession will force employers to make cuts and restructure. People are being put on the street, and everyone is worried. It’s now time for the country to start providing a solution.

In his semi annual address to Congress, Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, listed the many problems of the nation’s Economy.

Bernanke’s main point was a call to improve weak markets, which can’t simply   more...be solved by the Fed cutting rates, as inflation would continue to rise in the process.

With the air and automotive industries facing a breakdown, and the rising cost of living affecting housing and energy costs, the country must look to stop trying to keep up with the Global Economy, and take care of home first.

The White House is pushing to improve consumer confidence, which stems from what Bernanke calls a “decline in wealth.” As jobs are being lost and consumer prices go up, those with money, are less inclined to spend it.

In what could be called a Perfect Storm of financial troubles for banks, a weak job market, high food and energy costs, and a weak dollar, a change is not immediate.

The solution will take time, and must start with improvements in healthcare, education opportunities, and a tax code.

A new data analysis software system in Connecticut searches online job listings in order to help colleges identify the skills students need to find jobs in today’s market.
The project uses a web crawler   more...that scours online listings in the financial services and insurance industries, then sends that information to specialized software built specifically for this effort. Ultimately, the data collected is sent to colleges to help them develop relevant curriculum for their job-seeking students.
The state of Connecticut used part of a $2.7 million US Department of Labor training grant to develop what is seen as a model project for other states.
The state called upon Skillproof, a Bridgeport, CT based labor research organization, for its web crawling technology with data analytics software designed by IBM, Pace University of New York..
Already, the project has proven to be worthwhile. The data collected by the software showed that there were a large number of unfilled openings for high-paying insurance actuarial jobs. When looking for actuaries, employers look primarily for analytic and communication skills. With this information in hand, Connecticut schools were able to respond immediately by expanding their curriculum to teach the specific skills associated with actuarial work.
Developers of this software system hope that the success in Connecticut will encourage other states to utilize the system and fill niches in all industries by identifying the skills students need to find high-paying jobs in today’s market.  less
