Tod Browning's 1932 banned classic. Part One introduces the characters and shows how different "normals" treat the "freaks", from condescendingly cruel, to kind and loving. Cleopatra   more...the "normal" beauty toys with the love of Hans the midget, right in front of Frieda his finacee's face.

From the Wiki: "Freaks began filming in October 1931 and was completed in December. Following disastrous test screenings in January 1932 (one woman threatened to sue MGM, claiming the film had caused her to suffer a miscarriage), the studio cut the picture down from its original 90 minute running time to just over an hour. Much of the sequence of the freaks attacking Cleopatra as she lay under a tree was removed, as were a number of comedy sequences and most of the film's original epilogue. A new prologue featuring a carnival barker was added, as was the new epilogue featuring the reconciliation of the tiny lovers. This shortened version had its premiere at the Fox Criterion in Los Angeles on February 10."

In the UK this film was banned for 30 years after it was first released and was originally banned in Australia.

Knightchik asked the question, is what we're doing an agent for positive change? (well, in so many words...)

Ugh, it was too early in the morning, when my internal spellcheck   more...was still asleep! I misspelled KNIGHTCHIK and Alanis Morrisette's name at the end. I'm sure she'll be plenty disappointed...

Also, I want to add to this that v-logging is one of so many aspects of the internet that hold the potential for positive change. Hell, it already has and those who have been paying attention and have been a part of it have seen it. I was a part of (and am rejoining) dailykos.com, THE group political blog for progressives and they were very effective in their grassroots efforts to help elect candidates that spoke the truth in the face of fear.

BUT, and this is a very big BUT, this can't be the only thing we use. At some point, we have to move our BUTTS and DO something other than make videos and support one another. We have to get out there and engage in the real world- that includes our families and our friends.

If we want to see real change, we can use this to communicate and network, exchange ideas, help one another deepen our understanding about things, but at some point, we have to take action and that must be done away from the computer. This is a tool- a GREAT tool, but it's something that we didn't have not too long ago, and it WILL make all the difference as long as we do something with what we've learned from it.  less
